WARNING! SPOILERS for Ms. Marvel 1x06, 'No Normal'.

Ms. Marvel, the latest MCU series to air on Disney Plus, has wrapped up with an action-packed finale that saw Kamala Khan don her official Ms. Marvel suit for the first time, taking on the Department of Damage Control to protect her friend Kamran as he struggles to control his own newly acquired superpowers. In the process, Kamala is embraced by her family and the people of Jersey City as their very own superhero.

Then, in one of the most exciting post-credits scenes for one of the Disney Plus series yet, Kamala, after witnessing an odd glow from her bangle, suddenly disappears, with Captain Marvel herself, Carol Danvers, appearing in Kamala's room. Carol is clearly disturbed by this development, while Kamala's fate is unknown, leaving the series on a massive cliffhanger that most likely won't be resolved until The Marvels hits the big screen in July 2023. Brie Larson and Iman Vellani will reprise their roles as Carol Danvers and Kamala Khan in the film, alongside Teyonah Paris, reprising her role as the adult Monica Rambeau from WandaVision.

The wait brings with it plenty of time for theories and speculation. Some fans have come to the conclusion that Ms. Marvel's post-credits scene may be inspired by a storyline from the early days of Captain Marvel comics.

As long time fans will be aware, in comic canon, Carol Danvers was not the first Captain Marvel. That honour goes to the Kree hero, Mar-Vell. Originally sent to Earth to gather intelligence for a planned invasion by the Kree Empire, Mar-Vell falls in love with Earth and its occupants, and takes on the identity of Captain Marvel to protect his new home. When the Kree find out about this, Mar-Vell is labelled a traitor, arrested, and taken home to face punishment. While he escapes Kree custody, an accident on his way back to Earth results in Captain Marvel becoming trapped in a dimension known as the Negative Zone.

Thankfully, before his capture by the Kree, Mar-Vell managed to hide his Nega-Bands, which he used to help channel his cosmic powers, on Earth. He forms a telepathic connection with teenager Rick Jones, and guides him to the location of the bands, instructing him to put them on. When Rick slams the Nega-bands together, he is able to briefly switch places with Mar-Vell in the Negative Zone. The arrangement works well, as Rick is already an ally of the Avengers and other heroes, meaning he is in a good position to know when Captain Marvel is needed, and use the Nega-bands to switch places with him when there are villains to be fought.

Even after Mar-Vell is freed from the Negative Zone, Rick remains a close friend and ally until Mar-Vell's death from Cancer.

Have Carol and Kamala switched places?

Before Kamala Khan's bangle received its backstory during the Ms. Marvel series, many fans speculated that it would be revealed as a Nega-band, thus giving the character a greater tie to the history and legacy of Captain Marvel in both comics and film. This wasn't the case, with the bangle instead tying to MCU Kamala's Djinn heritage, and, as revealed in the finale, activating a mutation in her DNA.

However, while Kamala's bangle has not officially been named as a Nega-Band, fans speculate that it may have behaved as the Nega-Bands do in the aforementioned classic comics, causing Kamala Khan and Carol Danvers to switch places in Ms. Marvel's post-credits scene. Since Carol has ended up in Kamala's bedroom, we can assume that Kamala has been transported to wherever Carol was.

Given Carol's ability to travel across the universe quite quickly as Captain Marvel, Kamala could be just about anywhere, however, fan theorists have already narrowed it down to a couple of most likely possibilities. While some fans believe Kamala will appear aboard the Skrull Space Station commanded by Nick Fury, others believe that Kamala's current location will be tied to whatever Carol rushed off to investigate during the post-credits sequence of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Either way, once Kamala's whereabouts are revealed, more questions will be raised. For example, will the swap be a one-off, or will Carol and Kamala continue to switch places throughout The Marvels? How will Kamala's family react to an Avenger suddenly appearing in their home?

We'll just have to wait and find out. The Marvels is currently expected to hit theatres in July 2023.
