Why I'm Not Hyped For 'Avengers: Doomsday'

Avengers: Doomsday should be a cause for celebration for Marvel fans everywhere. It's our first Avengers movie in seven years, and it's bringing the big bad that is Doctor Doom to the big screen in amazing comic book accuracy.

But sadly, for this movie goer, it just isn't giving me the hype that I should be feeling. Why is that? Well, it all starts with one name; Jonathan Majors.

Majors was of course a big face in the MCU from Loki's first season onwards. He Who Remains. Victor Timely. Kang The Conqueror. He was being lined up to be an unstoppable force, and his story was going to culminate in two major (no pun intended) team-up movies; Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Of course, Majors was dropped from Disney and Marvel Studios once he was found guilty of abuse charges. But, although it is weird to say now I guess, it was all going amazingly. His performance in the final episode of Loki's first season is rewatchable. His acting ability as every Kang variant was as good as the last. He was looking to be a very different type of big bad from Thanos. So it was really sour when Marvel decided to go in a different direction. And that's exactly where my problem stems from.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty was literally about all of the variants of Kang. All with Jonathan Majors' face. There was so much groundwork laid for this big, epic finale of the Multiverse Saga. We even got an arena of Kangs at the end of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. All bent on war. The stage was set...then quickly disassembled to take another form.

With this in mind, Avengers: Doomsday is purely a cobbled together story to try and do a couple of things. One, to try and level up from what they had planned beforehand. In order to make up for dropping Majors,Kevin Feige and the team had to go above and beyond to make up for their decision. In my opinion, Doctor Doom wasn't a character we were going to see until Avengers: Secret Wars, and that was it. Maybe not even as the main villain.

Two, to hit us in the nostalgia gut and remind us of how great Marvel Studios has been. It's no secret that the MCU's quality has lacked on quite a few project since Avengers: Endgame. So with Majors being dropped and the Kang storyline going off the tracks, they needed to regroup and decide on how they were going to save their Multiverse Saga and potentially the MCU as a whole. The best way of doing so? Ride on the heights of the franchise's history.

Bring back The Russo Bros. Bring back RDJ. Chris Evans. The god damn X-Men, who started off Marvel movies all the way back in the year 2000. It all feels very much like the day Majors was fired, Kevin Feige ran around his office saying "What do we do? Who can we get back? We need to keep everyone interested. Just do whatever it takes to keep people happy!".

Robert Downey Jr coming back as Doctor Doom? It all linking back to Avengers: Endgame (arguably the MCU's most popular movie)? Chris Evans being dragged back? It all just feels like a desperate attempt at pleasing fans that isn't organic at all.

I'll still be one of the first in line to see Avengers: Doomsday. Absolutely. I really am hoping that this is going to be a great movie and gets me pumped for Secret Wars. A movie I really am hyped for as it stands. HOWEVER, it is just shrouded in the fact that this wasn't the original plan. It's a movie that is only happening because of one great actor's terrible mistake. It's effectively a Plan B that had to be pulled together so that the MCU didn't look like it was derailing.

Time will tell as to whether this movie delivers, but it's always going to be tainted by a bit of a "what if?" lingering in the air.

Either way, Avengers: Doomsday hits cinema screens this December.
