Season 3 of The Handmaid Tale on Hulu has ended, but that has not stopped fans from asking, "Where was Nick?" Most of the other main actors were part of the finale, but not Nick. He was not only absent from the finale, but he was also absent from most of Season 3. However, it was not his fault.

There were intense moments in the finale without Nick. The Waterfords are getting what they deserve for the criminal activity they have been involved in up to this part of the series. Serena Joy, played by Yvonne Strahovski, finally is facing the consequences for her involvement in trying to be in baby Nichole's life. Her husband Fred, played by Joseph Fiennes, has his own consequences to face. They have turned on each other. Viewers will see both of them on trial when The Handmaid's Tale returns around April or June 2020.

June, played by Elisabeth Moss, succeeded in getting over 52 children from Gilead's oppressive regime. She put her own life on the line so the children could be free even though she and Hannah, her own child, were not among those who found freedom. June suffered a gunshot wound in her abdomen in the final scene.

Even Janine, played by Madeline Brewer, was seen as a happy woman even though she missed the plane going from Gilead to Canada. She went to find June who deliberately missed the plane so the others could escape. Viewers saw Janine being empowered and want to see her maintain that power in the next season.

All of those things were exciting, but one question remains unanswered: "Where was Nick?"

"Where Was Nick?"

Showrunner Bruce Miller explained Nick's absence to Harper's Bazaar. First of all, he admits that it was like Nick, played by Max Minghella, had been "plucked off the face of the earth." He hadn't been seen since Episode 6.

Miller acknowledges Nick's absence was a mystery to viewers, but it was not the original plan at all. In fact, scenes with Nick in them were shot, but they were not aired because they were cut from the series. The showrunner said there just was not enough time to focus on more scenes with Nick in them. He said the show did manage to check in on Emily, Moira, and Luke from time to time, but not Nick.

Miller laments that it was heartbreaking for the show to cut Nick's scenes, but they had to do what was best for the show. He tells fans not to worry. He promised viewers they will see more of Nick in Season 4.

Nick and June's Relationship

Nick was not physically present often in Season 3, but his influence was there. His relationship with June might have become more complicated after she learned some interesting things about him. She discovered that Nick was a soldier in the Gilead crusade. He played a major part in the origin of the regime and was an Eye, a spy for Gilead. Then he was promoted to a commander before he was shipped off to Chicago as Gilead battles over territory in the United States.

It was shocking to June when she first found out about Nick's involvement in the birth of the regime. She gives him the benefit of the doubt and concludes that her baby's father did not really didn't lie to her. He just failed to tell her the truth.

Moss said in an interview that she loves her relationship with Nick and missed him during his absence. However, she is glad the series focused more on her fight for freedom instead of their romance in Season 3.

Elisabeth Moss is not only the protagonist and main character on the Hulu series, but she is also one of the executive directors. She told Entertainment Tonight that "June gets what June wants. Therefore, viewers should never count her out." So, don't think she died after she was wounded. Besides, where would Gilead be without June? The officials can get away with cutting Nick out of the series, but there is no way they can keep June from being front and center in every episode.
