When all the shelves are full

The greatest issue for my hobby

Just some of the space my collection takes up

What will I do when all the shelves are full? What will I do when there’s no more room on the TV cabinet? When the bookcase is at capacity, what will I do then? What about when the corner of the sideboard has no more space?

Where will my Lego go then?

I know that I’m not the only Lego collector with this dilemma. But it’s getting to be a serious concern for me, as I haven’t slowed down on my Lego purchasing, but I have slowed down on my building simply because the requisite space is no longer there, or at least it’s not as bountiful as it once was.

I’ve toyed with a variety of solutions

Can it go on the floor? Maybe a big set, like the Eiffel Tower, but not any of the Star Wars sets; they will get stepped on.  Even the big sets on the ground could be bumped into, resulting in catastrophic failure.

Could I sell some? I’m going to stop you right there; that's not an option!

I have considered taking apart some of my older sets to build and display something new. But on reflection, I don’t know if this will solve anything either, because I still have to find somewhere to store those unbuilt sets.  I also have a full “to be built” cupboard which is already overflowing, as well as all the boxes and manuals, because, as you know, you can’t throw those out either.

A recent solution I have found is wall mounts for the Technic cars. It’s a unique way to display cars, and I still have some wall space available, but it will fill the walls as well.  Besides, it’s not suitable for all set types; they are just too awkwardly shaped. To add to my issues, my daughter has started storing some of her sets in my office as well because she has limited shelf space in her bedroom.

Wall mounts present a temporary solution

Then, as if trying to destroy me completely, Lego announces a new set that I absolutely need.  Am I going to let this conundrum stop me from buying it? Of course not. I will buy it, then try to figure out how to make it fit somewhere in the house. It’s likely to sit in the “to be built” cupboard for a little while as I ponder the logistics, but then it’s getting pulled out, and it is going to be assembled.

I guess there is one last option. It may be time to go to the worst-case scenario protocol. It does seem quite viable to me.

I need to buy a much larger house, maybe a 5-bedroom place with a large garage and maybe a basement. Then I can dedicate a good two-thirds of the house to Lego storage. Maybe if I build off the plan, I can adequately accommodate current and future needs.

It is the only solution.

So now that I’ve worked this solution out, there’s just one last thing I am going to need help with. I need someone to break the news to my wife. She’s generally quite reasonable about these things – ok that’s a lie. She already has issues with the size of my collection, and we moved house a year ago, when she discovered the full extent of Lego that I’d been hiding from her.

But if someone is willing to bite the bullet and give her the “good” news that we are moving and likely going into debt for the rest of our lives, and likely our daughter's life too, then that should all be sweet.

Thank you, I’ll be off building my Hulkbuster.

Just a little more space, please
