What’s The Furthest Place From Here? #2

Image Comics 2021

Written by Matthew Rosenberg

Illustrated by Tyler Boss

Lettered by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou

DOUBLE-SIZED SECOND ISSUE!

With Sid missing, her family must leave the comfort of their home in a desperate search for her. But the world beyond their walls is not a friendly place. Ask the wrong questions, and you may find out the hard way that you can never go home.

Amidst all the distractions Sid took off and went to find this city and I have no doubt she’ll find it, she’s pregnant after all and I’m sure the Strangers will want her there to give birth. It is the rest of her family that is now going on a road trip to find her and we’re finally going to see the state of this world. Also as a side note I like Merrill and I hope he stays with the group now that he’s left his old family and is travelling with them. There is something about him that adds a bit of humour and more to the story that intrigues me. Then there’s Prufrock and unless I miss my guess he’s on the verge of being an adult and we’re going to see what happens to someone when this happens and it doesn’t look good but still again it’s another thread that’s super intriguing.

I’m very much enjoying the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information are presented exceptionally well. The character development that we see through the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter does a wonderful job in continuing to flesh out their personalities. The pacing is excellent and as it takes us through the pages revealing more of the story the more we’re drawn in asking questions and become thoroughly engaged.

I think the way that we see this being structured is fantastic as is how we see the layers within the story continue to emerge, grow, evolve and strengthen. I also like how we see these layers opening up new avenues to be explored. With the introduction of new groups, new places and their current road trip the depth, dimension and complexity we see added is sensational. How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how we see it move the story forward is impeccably handled.

The interiors we see are really rather well done. The creativity and imagination we see in the buildings and such that are repurposed as housing are great to see. The linework is great and how we see the varying weights being utilised to create the detail we see within the work is excellently rendered. I love that we see backgrounds as much as we do as they not only enhance and expand the moments but also work within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling. The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is fantastic to see. That plaid shirt Prufrock is wearing is stunning.

There are so many questions I, as a reader, have that I’m anxious to get answers to but then again half the fun is watching this unfold and learning alongside the characters. After all, what they are doing and experiencing is brand new to them as well and this is how we should learn, alongside them. With each issue I am getting more and more excited about the prospect of what’s to come and that’s what a good story should do to you. With some excellent writing and superb characterisation alongside these amazingly solid interiors a teenage post apocalyptic story never looked so good.
