What 'BH90210' Should Look Like

The upcoming "event" series needs to poke fun at its cast.

Have you heard? Tori Spelling got an acting job! The Powers That Be are once again rebooting beloved 90s teen soap, Beverly Hills, 90210 as a mockumentary (think Curb Your Enthusiasm). The cast of the original series is reuniting (sans Luke Perry, RIP) after someone gets the bright idea to reboot OG 90210. Shannen Doherty was the last original cast member to sign on and is probably the most important one. Here's what should happen if the series is to be a success.

Lean into public perception.

Most people believe that Shannen was "the bad girl" on the set. Rumor has it Aaron Spelling was so worried about Doherty's influence on his little girl Tori, that he tried to have them share as few scenes as possible. They also say that Tori only got the job because of nepotism.

Who cares if these things are false or not? They make for great stories. Has Shannen's cancer softened her bad girl ways? For the record, we're happy the "Badass" beat cancer (look up Badass and Shannen Doherty). Or has it renewed her vixen ways, especially since there are rumors out there that Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling united in an effort to get Shannen fired? That kind of storyline could really help fuel episodes (and ratings!) and clinch a renewal. Frankly, if they don't write something like that another writer should.

Cast Hookups

Most of the cast is now married. But this is not a reality show, it is a show where these actors are playing exaggerated versions of themselves. It would be extraordinary fun to see Jennie Garth and Jason Priestly hit the sheets as themselves. Even more fun but much less likely, Brian Austin Green and Ian Ziering trying to hide the fact that they hooked up and were a couple. Would the storyline be PC? No, but again since this is verging on a satirical take on reboots, why not go all in?

One of the reasons the show became such a pop culture touchstone is because of the Brenda/Kelly/Dylan love triangle that played out over the summer of the show's first season. It would be fun to revisit that, instead of Perry being the catalyst for the falling out between Garth and Doherty, what if it was Priestly? That could reignite the feud, even if it would bring an eww factor to viewers who only see Doherty and Priestly as the Walsh twins.

Build to a big event.

Since there isn't a guarantee of a second season and only six episodes in this one, there needs to be an endgame. The obvious answer to what the show should be building towards is the premiere of the rebooted 90210. This would give them a stopping point and could also fuel some story for a potential season two. Maybe Doherty gets so drunk at the premiere party that she lets loose with a cannon of secret reveals. That could give the show enough closure that fans feel satisfied, and can live with pretending that it so replicated real life that in some universe these things are still happening. Or it could lay the groundwork for a second season where people have to deal with the fallout from these bombshells.

It would also be a hoot to see Garth, Spelling, and Doherty do a girls night out. There could be bitchy comments and true female bonding. Those things don't have to be mutually exclusive.

Honor Luke Perry.

Why is this one last? Because it is the most important one. We already know the show has a plan to honor the late actor, but it needs to be more than one splashy event designed for ratings. There need to be smaller moments weaved into the show, where they recognize him.

Like when Doherty has to do a love scene, she can get emotional since Perry was the one she did her first love scene with all those years ago. Or maybe when discussing an in-joke between cast members someone can recognize Luke's contribution to that joke or how it used to crack him up.

Since Doherty and Perry seemed to be the closest after the show went off the air, it stands to reason that she would be the one to bear the brunt of the Luke Perry memorial moments. In fact, she would probably prefer it that way.
