Weathering With You

Makoto Shinkai Movies - Part 2

This past year I have found a new appreciation for anime movies. I have always adored Studio Ghibli and would watch an anime movie if it was a continuation of a series, outside of that I didn't give anime movies much thought. Little did I know there is a whole world of anime movies that I have been missing out on.

One of the biggest discoveries was an incredibly talented creator Makoto Shinkai. His creative storytelling, combined with stunning artwork, will keep your eyes locked on the screen. I decided to watch through all of his movies and let you know what I think about them, what is worth watching, and their ratings.

I am currently binging through as many as I can find, If you have any anime movie recommendations please comment them below.

Weathering with You was released in 2019 but did not gain as much popularity as Your Name. I only found it because it was streaming on Max and I needed something to watch. This is an extremely creative story concept, I have never seen anything like it before.

Storyline: The summer of his high school freshman year, Hokoda runs away from his remote island home to Tokyo, and quickly finds himself pushed to his financial and personal limits. The weather is unusually gloomy and rainy every day as if to suggest his future. He lives his days in isolation, but finally finds work as a writer for a mysterious occult magazine. Then one day, Hokoda meets Hina on a busy street corner. This bright and strongwilled girl possesses a strange and wonderful ability: the power to stop the rain and clear the sky...

This movie throws you in the middle of a few characters' stories. I would be lying if I didn't say the beginning wasn't a little confusing. By the end, the story unfolds, after rewatching it I now see why the story makes sense a little out of order. Visually this movie is stunning, from the weather to the scenery, the animators went all out creating a masterpiece.

Unlike Your Name, Weathering with You is a full-blown drama with little pockets of joy. It is very emotional, with heavy topics and challenges. It makes you think about what you would sacrifice for the greater good. Is it okay to lose a life to save many, or is it okay to not want to lose the ones you love?

As we watch the characters grow together we grow connected with their past and their determination to create a beautiful life from the bad hand life had dealt them. The adults in this movie don't know how to navigate the world and get a new sense of joy and purpose watching these kids continue to persevere.

Young love is pure and confusing. You grow close so quickly and realize you don't remember life without this person. The main characters fall for each other fast and want to create a happy life together, but with the challenges they face a happy life seems unachievable. But they never give up and even if the world is against them, they fight for and believe in each other.

I found that the story in a movie plays out one or two ways. The movie can start at the beginning and you join the characters in living out the story or you start in the middle of the story and get hooked on how things are going to play out. Weathering with You is the second one. There are some parts of the movie you might even be lost and not understand why something is happening but in the end, it all unfolds to reveal a beautiful story.

The conclusion to Weathering with You was beautifully written. It pulls at your heartstrings and gives you a bone-chilling realization of why the movie played out the way it did. The second time I watched Weathering with You I saw so many things I missed the first time because I didn't yet understand how the story was unfolding.

Ratings:

IMDb: 7.5/10

Anime Planet: 4.2/5

My Review: I didn't like Weathering with You as much as I liked Your Name. With that being said it still was an entertaining movie. Visually it was beautiful and worth watching just to see the world these talented animators created. The storyline was unique, a little easy to get lost in but it made a great ending. It was sweet to watch such young characters fight for love, and not accept the reality that the adults around them were trying to give them. No one believed in them, everyone was against them and yet they continued to be full of hope. It does make you think about what you would do to save the ones you love. Overall I'd say it's worth watching at least once.

I thought it was so special to have a camo of Mitsuha and Taki from You Name in Weathering with you. After the ending of Your Name, it makes you wonder what ended up happening to these two. It made me happy to see they got their happily ever after.

What were your thoughts on Weathering with You? Did you like the ending?
