Caroline Sunshine as Sylvie Garrett

Hard to believe that it's been five years since the film, Mommy, I Didn't Do It premiered on Lifetime. There are two main things I remember about New Year's Day 2017. One, I was watching a primetime game between the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions, which the Packers won to clinch the NFC North. The second thing came later in the day; I switched to Lifetime and watched Mommy, I Didn't Do It, which was the sequel to The Wrong Woman, which came out in 2013.

In The Wrong Woman, main character Ellen Plainview found herself falsely accused of assault, and defended herself in court. Regarding the sequel, it opened with a murder committed by a hooded figure entering the victim's car, and regarding the victim, he was revealed as Gene Dutton, a teacher who had Ellen Plainview's daughter, Julie, as well as Julie's best friend, Sylvie Garrett, among his students. In an absolute shocker, Julie ends up arrested and charged with killing Gene, with Julie voicing her denial as she's taken into custody.

Ellen decides to investigate and represent Julie, just as she did for her own case in the first film's events. Her quest hasn't been an easy one. Though Sylvie appeared to show some support for Julie, Sylvie's mother, Anna Garrett, wanted her daughter away from Julie. Ellen's visit to Gene's widow, Vera Dutton, also turned unfriendly, as Vera loudly voiced her belief that Julie was lusting after Gene and killed him, even going as far as repeating her deranged beliefs during Julie's trial in response to a revelation that Gene had been fired from another school due to an inappropriate situation with a female student.

It was also revealed that Gene actually fell in love with Julie, who never reciprocated Gene's affections, and in the climax, Julie also noticed that a burned CD mainly consisting of hip-hop songs was found in his collection of discs. Gene hated hip-hop, meaning that whoever was truly in love with him made that for Gene, and regarding Julie, she was shown informing Sylvie about her discovery. Sylvie responded with apparent mocking of Julie's brilliance, before making a shocking revelation: she was Gene's killer.

As Sylvie revealed, she had harbored jealousy of Julie, and had also fallen in love with Gene, but the last straw (in her mind) came when she attempted to form a relationship with Gene, as the married teacher turned her down due to his affections for Julie. Sylvie planned to kill Gene out of revenge, and it began with the villainess answering Gene's text to Julie and arranging a meeting. Sylvie took a knife from Julie's kitchen and used it in the murder, and she later showed Julie the same knife during her confession. Her intention, at that moment, was to kill Julie, but she was stopped in time by Ellen, who also figured out that Sylvie was the true killer. Sylvie's attempt to kill Ellen was stopped by Julie, who knocked out her villainous former friend and tended to Ellen as Sylvie was taken away.

As I stated before, Mommy, I Didn't Do It aired on Lifetime on January 1, 2017, and featured Caroline Sunshine as the evil Sylvie Garrett. I loved Sylvie; she was quite an amazing villainess, and another one who falls under the trope, Bitch in Sheep's Clothing. As her climactic reveal uncovered, Sylvie was immensely psychotic and delusional; she was chasing someone who she couldn't have, and resorted to murder when she didn't get her way. Even five years later, I continue to love Sylvie's heel turn, because Sunshine did a terrific job portraying Sylvie's insanity and murderous demeanor. This was an amazing role for Caroline Sunshine. It is also her most recent one to date, as she went into the world of politics in the following year.
