Mae Everhart inherits an old horse from her long lost mother, only to discover a strange nub on the horse’s forehead hidden beneath a fly bonnet. Searching for answers, Mae explores her mom’s abandoned veterinary office and finds a secret book her mother hid just for her, its title… Unikorn Guide!

We’ve come to expect certain things from all-ages books but have I got news for you this breaks all those rules, expectations and preconceived notions you may have. This is smart, intelligent and fully relatable to character wise even if the subject matter isn’t so well realistic. Though don’t we wish it were? There is love, loss and a girl just hitting her teenage years that has what feels like the weight of the world on her shoulders after such a horrific tragedy. So this issue introduces us Mae and her life and the possibilities that lie yet undiscovered. Also being yourself is how make new friends so don’t let the bullies win or try and be one back just be and do you.

I love the way that this is being told. The opening is phenomenal and as it takes us through her background and the catalyst for the story it creates this beautiful empathy for Mae. the story & plot development we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. The character development is astounding! We really get to see the full spectrum of emotions and how Mae in particular acts and reacts to the situations and circumstances she encounters and this fleshes her out. At this age she’s more malleable so i’m looking forward to seeing where she goes from here. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages we’re caught up in this like the pull of the currents in the water.

The way that this is being structured and how we see the layers within the story emerging it's not easy but not difficult to see which of them will be more impactful later on. The way that everything works together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it constantly moves the story forward is utterly delightful to see happen.

The interiors here are absolutely phenomenal! The linework we see is gorgeous and through the varying weights and techniques being utilised to create the detail work that we see is astonishingly good. With what we see and the backgrounds being utilised along with how it is all seen within the composition of the panels bringing the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the book which is utterly mindbogglingly good. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling. The colour work is mind numbing in appearance. How we see the various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work shows more than an innate understanding of how to use colour. The water, ice, trees and the sky for starters show such superb skill and talent in colour application.

What a completely and utterly delightful book this is. Mae is a great character and she has this untapped potential that just screams to be explored and while we don’t know when her mother intended to introduce her to the truth she’s already handling it better than I would’ve expected. What this issue does is create this desire within the reader to know more. It so amazingly well put together from concept through lettering and it stays with you in some of the positive ways imaginable.
