Underrated Superheroes

Marvel and DC

Scarlet Witch

Okay obviously you knew she was going to be on the list, people have been sleeping on my girl since her first appearance in 1964, she has grown into one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel universe, an indisputable fact that people often refuse to acknowledge. House of M remains one of the greatest feats of power the comic book universe has ever seen and I personally can’t wait to see how they continue to grow her character and her powers in the MCU.

Vixen

I love Vixen for so many reasons, one of the main ones being that my introduction to superheroes was the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited cartoons. Vixen was supposed to be the first black women character with her own title, but her original series was canceled in 1978 but was finally released with other canceled stories in the Canceled Comics Cavalcade. I am hoping she is somewhere in James Gunn’s plans for the DCEU.

Hawkgirl

A sidekick for 66 years on the page, my girl Shayera was finally given her chance to shine in the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited cartoon series. The series focused on her character arc and redemption yet she still gets brushed off or met with looks of confusion when her name is mentioned. Yes she was in Legends of Tomorrow but as the show as a whole as well as her characterization was truly truly awful, I refuse to acknowledge its existence.

Green Lantern

I am a John Stewart, Green Lantern lover. He is often overlooked for Hal Jordan, but John Stewart is peak Green Lantern not just in the comics but in the animated series as well.

Martian Manhunter

Otherwise known as J’onn J’onzz quite possibly the dumbest name ever given to a comic book character but here we are. Now not only is he super worthy of his own series but he adds a lot to the Justice League as is. Once again I bring up the animated series because I truly think that all characters were at their best in DCs animated era.

Jubilee

Now I love mutants so clearly we know I have to bring up the X-Men and their associated members. Perhaps my favorite story is the limited series Wolverine and Jubilee. Decimation and the Curse of Mutants are also major storylines for her. But Jubilee is almost always overlooked when talking about the mutants.

Emma Frost

My girl Emma Frost, this baddie has some pretty memorable head to heads with the lovely Jean Grey as they are in a love triangle with Cyclops. She also has a killer character arc as she started as a villain against the X-Men and then walks the line between hero and villain for quite a while, occasionally fully solidifying herself as a hero.

Silver Sable

My next two women are of the Spider-Verse. Starting with Silver Sable, without superpowers she is an expert marksman, swordsman, and gymnast as well as an expert in hand to hand combat and martial arts. There were rumors of a Silver Sable animated series but I'm not sure if that's still happening, but I'm hoping for it because this woman is super badass.

Spider-Gwen

Apparently now ghost spider? Though I refuse to acknowledge that dumb and needless change. Now Gwen has gotten more comic book attention then most of the women on this list but it is more recent.

Black Canary

Her inception was sexist and disturbing but since then she has become one of my favorite characters. Her Smallville adaptation is one of the best live action depictions and once again so was Justice League Unlimited.

Now underrated doesn’t only mean unknown, because I could have pulled out plenty of obscure heroes but most obscure heroes are such because they suck. They’ve got lame powers so these are characters that don’t necessarily spring to mind when you talk about Superheroes.
