Twilight Saga Sequels Theories

Stephanie Meyer has promised two new sequels, but what could they be?

It’s been more than two years since readers returned to Forks through the eyes of Edward Cullen in Midnight Sun, a companion novel to Twilight.

Fourteen years after the vampire cult classic was published, Stephanie Meyer revealed in August 2020 that she had two more Twilight books planned in an interview with USA Today.

"There are two more books I think in the world that I want to write. I have got them outlined and a chapter written I think of the first one, so I know it's there. I am not ready to do that right now, I want to do something brand new," she said. "For me, a lot of the joy of writing comes from creating and I really want to do a new world and new rules and new mythology. Mythology is kind of my thing."

Fans have been begging Meyers for a sequel to Midnight Sun, which was her take on the Twilight story, but told from the perspective of Edward Cullen. However, Meyers said she wasn't heading in that direction. So it’s safe to say that these potential sequels will be a continuation of the franchise.

Twilight has been reimagined three times now with the original series, the gender swapped reimagined (Life & Death), the graphic novels by Young Kim and more recently Edward’s Midnight Sun. Fans have also had the Eclipse spinoff with The Short Second Life of Bree Tannar — so Meyer has proven she’s open to exploring the universe outside of Bella Swan’s perspective.

So as there’s no news to report on these details, these are just my predictions of where Meyer could take the series with two sequels.

Renesme Cullen and Jacob Black

This seems the most logical place to go storytelling wise, especially as Renesme’s birth was the driving force of Breaking Dawn as one of the few hybrids (half human and half vampire) known in the Twilight universe.

As readers know, Jacob Black has a complex history with Bella and Edward — the former third wheel of their love triangle, he imprints on their daughter and unintentionally unites the warring sides of werewolves and Cullens as Renesme’s soulmate and protector.

As both characters are immortal and imprinting means different things for different wolves, it’s left open to interpretation as to what their relationship will be become when Renesme becomes older. Many fans have theorised that Jacob and Nessie will fall in love, but would that happen?

With their history, could the past put a stop to a potential relationship with these characters as young adults or would they overcome that. There’s a lot to unpack with Nessie and for many reasons, she seems like the most natural choice to narrate a sequel or sequels in this saga.

Leah Clearwater

Leah Clearwater is the Beta of the Black pack and the only known female shape-shifter in Quileute history. She is the daughter of Harry Clearwater and Sue Clearwater. She is Seth Clearwater's older sister, and Sam Uley's ex-girlfriend. She phased into a wolf during the events of New Moon, around the same time as her brother, Seth. She also has deeply unsettled trust issues, including a broken heart, and is overprotective of her little brother.

Leah’s character was always an interesting character, because there was such a sadness around the character. The readers are limited to seeing Leah through Bella and Jacob’s sometimes bias perspective. However, she goes on an emotional journey throughout the last three books as she slowly lets her guard down.

This was empathised in the film adaptations with Julia Jones‘s superb performances that humanised the character. Which is why I believe Leah would be an excellent choice to star in a Twilight sequel. As the only female werewolf in the series, it leaves open many questions of what that means for her and whether she can form a connection with someone to imprint on.

The Cullens

I’ve previously written an article on why Rosalie Cullen should have her own prequel, but this also includes the rest of the resident vampire family. Throughout the series, we learn that each Cullen has an interesting and tragic backstory — Alice’s connection to Twilight’s antagonist James, Esme’s devastating loss of her child as a human and Carlisle’s early years as a vampire.

There have been a series of short films which explore these backstories in the Twilight Storytellers short film series, but a book dedicated to one of these characters would be a great insight into the mythology of the series too.

There’s yet to be confirmation what these sequels will be about and with no release dates, fans are still anticipating an announcement to be made.

What do you think? Which Twilight character or storyline in the sequels. Let us know in the comments.
