TOP 10: Most Anticipated Movies 2022
this year's looking a lil stacked
2022 has got some absolute (potential) BIG hitters coming up.
Quickly, let's just point out 'Scream' is already out otherwise it probably would've made it onto the list.
Secondly, these are not my picks, you wanna hear my picks then come ask me, I will provide. You can thank IMDb and Letterboxd for what we have here.
We're going with IMDb's most popular movies for 2022 rather than their own Top 10 anticipated movies for the year. Letterboxd has an ongoing 'Most Anticipated' feature.
Now this likely means some things that are due to release earlier may have a bit of a swing here, but you know what, are you not anticipating things more the nearer they get? Exactly, on we go.
10. 'Morbius'
IMDb: 10th
Letterboxd: 17th
Overall: 13.5th
I know, I see it, how did we get here?
I'm imagining the relevance of Spider-Man right now and the connection to Venom and the use of Vulture in the trailers has probably led to this being much more anticipated than it would've been if Venom hadn't shown up in 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' and Vulture hadn't shown up in the trailers. This. This is what a connection to the MCU gets you.
9. 'Don't Worry. Darling' / 'The Flash'
Don't Worry Darling
IMDb: 19th
Letterboxd: 6th
Overall: 12.5th
The Flash
IMDb: 15th
Letterboxd: 10th
Overall: 12.5th
'Don't Worry, Darling'. Olivia Wilde, Florence Pugh and Harry Styles. Think it's pretty clear why people are hype for this.
With 'The Flash' DC are going to start playing with the multiverse a bit more. Michael Keaton returns. I'm not all that hype but I'm probably going to see it.
Next.
8. 'Uncharted'
IMDb: 9th
Letterboxd: 15th
Overall: 12th
This one... This one's painful honestly. I am, let's say, concerned.
Is Tom Holland a good choice? Why is Mark Wahlberg here.? It feels offensive to Sully's name and nature. There's a sully joke available but it's a bit cheap init. What universe is it set in? Separate to the games? We've already seen how Nate and Sully meet in the games and it is not like this. The plane set piece from 'Uncharted 3' is in this so if it is the same universe your man Nate dropping out off planes regularly and sometimes with the exact same situation and movements without ever once acknowledging how bizarre that is.
Anyway, let's move on.
7. 'Avatar 2'
IMDb: 14th
Letterboxd: 9th
Overall: 11.5th
It has taken 13 years for this to get here and maybe it still won't who knows at this point.
Still though, obviously people are anticipating the sequel to the highest grossing film of all time.
The first one was certainly a visual feast but, as many people say, it's just blue space 'Pocahontas'.
However, James Cameron, has been deep diving into the ocean trying to do his usual push forward tin film technology. Fuck knows if he's succeeded but I guess we'll find out one day.
6. 'Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore' / 'Death on the Nile'
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore
IMDb: 6th
Letterboxd: 16th
Overall: 11th
Death on the Nile
IMDb: 11th
Letterboxd: 11th
Overall: 11th
Are we really anticipating 'Fantastic Beasts'? Who? Why?
I didn't realise 'Death on the Nile' has such a pull,I'm assuming this is off the back of 'Murder on the Orient Express' which I also didn't realise had such a fanbase. Is this because of Agatha Christie or is it due to the frankly batshit cast of:
Russell Brand
Dawn French
Gal Gadot
Armie Hammer
Emma Mackey
Jennifer Saunders
Letitia Wright
Adam Garcia
and others?
Anyway I have plans to see it so I guess yeah.
5. 'Killers of the Flower Moon'
IMDb: 8th
Letterboxd: 8th
Overall: 8th
Martin Scorsese's latest film with Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser and more. It's about serial murder.
I think we see why film people are anticipating this one.
I only know of it's existence because of this list and I have no interest in it.
4. 'Thor: Love and Thunder'
IMDb: 12th
Letterboxd: 3rd
Overall: 7.5th
Not to shit on Martin Scorsese's views about what constitutes cinema but this next instalment in the biggest franchise by the biggest company is gunna slap. In many ways that is a bad thing. But it's not like Martin brings any new ideas anymore. Nor is he working with lesser known actors. No disrespect I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy.
3. 'The Northman'
IMDb: 7th
Letterboxd: 4th
Overall: 5.5th
If your not someone who would consider themselves 'into film' or whatever, then you may not be aware of this. I am only aware of it by association. It's a viking period piece by the director of 'The Witch' (2015) and 'The Lighthouse' (2019), Robert Eggers.
People are clearly very excited by this director and his artistic choices. I appreciate I'm but I'm not sold yet.
2. 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness'
IMDb: 5th
Letterboxd: 2nd
Overall: 3.5th
Yes. Of course we're anticipating this. How could we not be?
Again it's just another instalment in the biggest franchise by the biggest company and in many ways that's a bad thing. But also, did you fucking see 'Spider-Man: No Way Home'? Are you not endlessly hyped to watch a multiverse fall apart. Do you not love Sam Raimi? Are you not intrigued by the MCU dabbling in Horror?
Runners Up
Alright, just before the top spot let's discuss the films that didn't quite make it.
15. 'Babylon'
IMDB: 15th
Letterboxd: 12th
Overall: 18.5th
Sure, why not.
14. 'Spider-Man across the Spider-Verse (Part One)
IMDb: 29th
Letterboxd: 5th
Overall: 17th
IMDb has committed an absolute crime here. What do you mean 29th?
The first one is one of if not the best animated movie we've ever had.
The same can be said in terms of superhero movies.
They came up with new animation ideas and everything.
Fuck you, IMDb.
13. 'Jurassic World: Dominion'
IMDb: 13th
Letterboxd:18th
Overall: 15.5th
12. 'Top Gun: Maverick'
IMDb: 17th
Letterboxd: 13th
Overall: 15th
11th: 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever'
IMDb: 22nd
Letterboxd: 7th
Overall: 14.5th
Again IMDb has dragged this one down a little and it's just missed the Top 10. I think there's as much apprehension with this film as there is anticipation. I just hope they do a really good job.
1. 'The Batman'
IMDB: 1st
Letterboxd: 1st
Overall: 1st
I mean... We all knew it was this right?
It's very very hard to compete with Batman when he's having a bad day never mind when it looks this good. Robert Pattinson as 'Batman' and Zoë Kravits as 'Catwoman' are inspired casting choices. To be fair the same is true of Paul Dano and Jeffrey Wright.
Honestly I cannot wait for this!
