Tom Holland Reveals Hilarious Reason He Botched His 'Star Wars' Audition

What Prevented Holland From Being Cast As Finn?

With No Way Home due to be released this week, everyone’s attentions have been placed squarely on the main man himself, Tom Holland. Despite being the third actor to play everyone’s favorite web-slinger, Holland has become synonymous with the role, with even Stan Lee himself supporting his portrayal. However, did you know Holland could have been a major part of a very different trilogy – Star Wars?

That’s right, it has been confirmed Holland actually auditioned for the role of Finn (a role eventually played by actor John Boyega), but he has confirmed that he struggled to read for the part properly, due to being unable to hold back fits of giggles when the lady he was reading with kept responding to his lines with droid noises. Holland has taken on more serious roles alongside his MCU role, but the actor is still very much a young person at heart, which you can see during interviews and in the videos he shares online. He tends to not take himself too seriously, which makes his reveal about botching his Star Wars audition all the more believable.

During an interview with the YouTube channel Hot Ones, Holland was directly asked about his audition for Star Wars and whether the story of him being unable to contain his laughter was true or not. Holland replied saying “That’s very true”.

He then went on to explain what actually happened. He said the lady with whom he was reading lines with would respond to him only in droid noises. This caused Holland to become overcome with “the giggles” as he thought she was joking. Even though she explained this was not a joke and formed part of the audition, Holland explained he couldn’t stop laughing “I just got the giggles. You know when you realize you’ve got something so wrong? I just couldn’t stop laughing”.

Since following in the footsteps of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, Holland has been catapulted into the limelight with a huge fanbase, however he was well on his way to becoming a prolific actor even before this role.

Holland began his career on stage with the musical Billy Elliot, in which he played the titular role. He then moved into the movie game with 2012’s The Impossible, starring alongside Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts, and also in 2015’s In The Heart Of The Sea alongside fellow MCU alum Chris Hemsworth. It wasn’t until 2016 that he would don the famous Spider-Man suit with a side role in Civil War, after which he got his own outing with Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017.

Since then, he has appeared multiple times within the MCU, with appearances in Infinity War and Endgame, along with his own sequel, Far From Home.

Holland’s portrayal of the wall-crawler has received so much acclaim, many feared the actor would become typecast, however this has not been the case. Holland has starred in a few other movies since joining the MCU, sadly not many with a high-profile release, but this may change with the upcoming Uncharted movie, based on the popular video game series, in which he will play the main character Nathan Drake. With rumors of a series of films, it is possible Holland could see himself become the face of a few different franchises, much like Star Wars alum Harrison Ford.

Before all of that though, Holland has his threequel, No Way Home, coming out and fans are going absolutely crazy for the movie. The hype and anticipation have been compared to that of Endgame, with rumors and theories galore, but we will finally get our answers when the movie is released in just a few days (my ticket is already booked as it comes out on the 15th of December in the UK, sorry!).

Going back to his potential involvement in Star Wars though, with any role, especially high, prolific ones, it’s hard to imagine anyone else in the part. However, it would have been very interesting to see Holland’s take on the character of Finn. You can check out the full and hilarious interview below:
