Returning Spider-Man Villains Receive Unique Posters Ahead Of 'No Way Home's' Release
The Hype-Train Is At Full Speed!
One of the foundations of any good superhero story is the evil adversary they must confront. Whether it be film, comic book, or video game, the likes of Red Skull, Magneto, and Thanos can make or break the heroes' story by their competence, insidiousness, and willingness to do whatever it takes to make their heinous plans succeed. With the highly anticipated new Spider-Man film hitting theaters in barely a week's time, the appearance of several iconic Marvel villains have generated quite the buzz with superhero fans.
One of the biggest additions to the newest phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the concept of a "multiverse." The events of Loki and WandaVision have seemingly set the stage for the collapse of any barriers keeping different multi-versal characters from crossing over into the realm of the MCU. Among these invaders from different timelines are antagonistic characters who have all died fighting Spider-Man. Included in this list are Doc Ock, Electro, and the Green Goblin.

In preparation for arguably the most anticipated film of the year, several unique posters for these villains have been released. All three posters prominently feature an enemy of Spidey facing down with our favorite wall-crawler as the viewer looks over Spidey's shoulder. Could this be to hide the fact that it is several different Spider-Men facing off against these opponents? With the appearance of Alfred Molina as Doc Ock, Jamie Foxx's Electro, and the iconic Willem Dafoe once again donning his Green Goblin armor, it is completely possible that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will arrive to help the besieged Tom Holland.
Possibly the most anticipated villain returning for No Way Home, is the tentacled terror, Doctor Otto Octavius. His character's arc in the second of the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films was a complicated one, as his body was taken over by the tentacles that gave him the name "Doctor Octopus." In the end, the true Otto is able to regain control and sacrifice himself to save the city and defeat his own evil machinations. Could the MCU's version of Doc Ock follow a similar path? Judging by the trailer, there is at least one scene where the good doctor and Spidey have a somewhat civil conversation. Is this because Otto is once again in control of his actions, or has he already been defeated and captured by the wall-crawler at this point? Only time will tell.
While most fans would probably rank Andrew Garfield's two Spider-Man movies at the bottom of the list, there were certainly some exceptional moments nestled in there. One of which was the performance of Jamie Foxx as Electro. Scared by his new powers, and already predisposed to be unsure of himself, Electro is driven down the villainous path in very avoidable fashion, making him a somewhat tragic character. While the character design of Electro was much maligned in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it seems that Marvel has corrected past wrongs and given Foxx a more comic accurate costume for this go around.
For this writer, there is no more highly anticipated appearance in No Way Home than the original cinematic Green Goblin. The gargoyle-like snarling mask, the iconic laugh and weaponry, and the chance to reference one of the best death scenes in a superhero movie, there is unlimited potential with the Goblin's return. Dafoe's sneering, threatening, creepy portrayal still resonates with fans to this day, two decades later.
With the popularity and success of the MCU, and the continued reign of Spider-Man as potentially the most popular superhero, expectations are high for this film. This could in fact be the most anticipated Marvel project since Endgame with multi-versal implications that could span for multiple phases to come, and quite possibly set up the next Thanos-level threat.
