The Silver Coin #1

Image Comics 2021

Written by Chip Zdarsky

Illustrated & Lettered by Michael Walsh

A new horror anthology miniseries for mature readers. Each issue will tell a tale of terror in a shared supernatural world. The story starts in 1978 with a failing rock band whose fortune suddenly changes when they find the mysterious Silver Coin. Little do they know that fame comes with a cost, and a curse is always hungry.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this but when I saw Chip Zdarsky was writing the issue it went onto my pile. I’ll tell ya what now that I know what the object is that will tie the series together I’ll admit to being a lot more intrigued than I thought I’d be. Each issue will be written and illustrated by a different creative team and I find the idea fascinating on so many levels. For this issue the spotlight is on Ryan as he and his band are looking to be liked, respected and play better music. When you are in a band with your friends and you’ve been together for years it can be easy to become complacent even if you don’t recognise that as being the case or true. So what happens when Ryan finds the mysterious Silver Coin, well you’ll have to read this to find out.

I am a fan of the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is incredibly well laid down. There is this natural progression to the events we see unfold and it makes all the difference in the world in how we view the story. The character development is sensational and as the story progresses and the personality changes it becomes more and more fascinating. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the story it sweeps us up along this weird and oddly entertaining tale.

How we see this being structured and how the layers within the story emerge it engages the readers mind and draws you even further in to what we see. With how everything works together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves everything constantly forward we see how terrifying that personality change can be.

I am totally digging the interiors here as well. It has this 80’s underground comix kind of feel where grunge meets rock and it does wonders to draw readers into the story as well. The linework is amazing and how we see the varying weights and techniques being utilised to create the detail in the work is stupendous! I could do with more backgrounds but how we see the composition within the panels bringing us this depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story all is forgiven. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show this really sublime eye for storytelling. The colour work too is intriguing to me. There are a lot of pages where the colours remain pretty much the same throughout the panels but how the various hues and tones within the colours are utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is brilliantly rendered. I am thoroughly impressed with what I see within these pages.

This new anthology style book, as opposed to the older one where there are several stories in one issue, is giving me life. First it’s HaHa now it’s Silver Coin and if this is the future of what Anthology series are going to be like then sign me up for all that come down the pike. This is superbly written with amazing characters and characterisation alongside some truly unique interiors that bring a new meaning to horror and what a curse is.
