If humans can figure out mysteries, then so can sheep.

The Sheep Detectives herded into theaters in 2026. When their beloved Farmer George is found dead, an investigation ensues between humans and sheep as they figure out who murdered him.

We’ve seen detective mysteries, but did you ever think of them with sheep helping you? The Sheep Detectives is a funny, cute, and whimsical story. It’s the right tone for kids to learn about sleuthing themes as they’re along for the ride of the mystery.

A cast of familiar faces stars in The Sheep Detectives, both as actors and lending their voices to the fluffy sheep. Although his role is small, Hugh Jackman brings warmth to Farmer George. He said ‘yes’ in a heartbeat after reading 25 pages of the script. Jackman is a passionate actor, praising the film. Farmer Gordon reading to his sheep is so heartwarming.

The actors are fully aware of the film’s comedic nature, going over the top in every scene. Emma Thompson is a joy to watch as the lawyer. Nicholas Braun was hilarious as a rookie cop who shows the town that he can do more. One of his funniest lines is his response to his first murder case.

Nicholas Galitzine, Hong Chau, Molly Gordon, Tosin Cole, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, and Conleth Hill make memorable scenes. They enjoyed their time working together.

Joining the barnyard as voices for the sheep are Julie Louis-Dreyfuss, Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, and more. They all bring enormous personality to the characters, making each sheep feel unique.

Scenes between the sheep are the highlight as they interact. Their sheep innocence got a lot of laughter for their misguided views of the human world.

Get ready for this, but no sheep were used for filming! I was surprised to learn this. According to the actors, they worked with sheep puppets. According to Braun, filmmakers created life-sized 2D cardboard posters to make the characters eye-level with the sheep. The film was originally set to be animated, but live action proved to be a better choice.

Kyle Balda immediately jumped into the director’s chair when he read the Sheep Detectives script. It’s a concept we don’t see enough of, and it works as a kids' movie. Other than the story, Balda said the themes of grief also drew him to the film. Balda wanted to explore this theme in a positive light after an unforgettable movie experience he had as a kid.

I don’t see enough kids' movies in theaters, and there were some memorable responses by children during the film. One child went, “They did it!” when each character is being questioned. That shows they’re paying attention.

Sheep Detectives has heavy themes about death. There’s a sad scene that depicts one character’s death onscreen. One child started crying. It was a tough moment that broke several theatergoers' hearts. However, it teaches children an important lesson.

Sheep Detectives isn’t just a mystery film. What truly makes it a strong kids movie is its message about teamwork, curiosity, and courage. It’s all about learning who you are and standing up for yourself. No matter who you are, animal or person, believe in yourself. Mystery cases have several theories, and the wildest pitch may end up saving the day.

This is a heartfelt movie that we all need right now. It’s funny and made me and several audience members smile. Younger children may find certain scenes alarming, but Sheep Detectives is a tender film for audiences to enjoy on a day out to the cinema.
