The Romance Comedy Of The Year Is An Adventure Romcom

Sandra Bullock And Channing Tatum Smash It

Brad Pitt was in the movie. Don’t let people forget it, he deserves props for his bit part. And, he explains to us that he's in there because he's so handsome, thanks to his weatherman father. The rest of the movie was an incredible example of what the genre, “action rom-com,” could be, and I want to coin the phrase before Hollywood steals it.

The Lost City

Sandra Bullock plays a successful romance novelist Loretta Sage and she’s burned out from the curve balls life has thrown at her. She’s on the verge of a final book in her series going public with some failure and going on tour. Her book The Lost City of D, humorously confused by the promoter as the lost city of "dick" and her cover model as the lost city of Dash, is meant to be her final one. She wants off the "merry-go-round" after some tough breaks leave her no longer feeling emotions like love.

Enter the book series famous cover model, Alan/Dash. He’s famous, good-looking, ripped, and gives a picturesque image of the hero of Loretta’s books to the female fans.

When Loretta storms off, expecting a car to pick her up, she voluntarily gets into the SUV owned by the “bad guy,” Abigail Fairfax. He needs her for her expertise in translating an ancient language to help him find the “Crown of Fire.” Suddenly, her books have become all too real and Loretta finds herself kidnapped by a nefarious billionaire with less than altruistic motivations.

The story takes people to the location of a forgotten island in the Atlantic and on an adventure of a lifetime as Alan/Dash calls upon the talents of Jack Trainer to mount a rescue for the woman he’s already in love with. From the comedic action between Jack and Alan, as they rescue Loretta and find themselves on the run through the island, the film took me back in time to Michael Douglas’s and Kathleen Turner’s adventures in Romancing The Stone.

Bullock shows herself as the incredible actress she is as she takes us on a roller coaster of awkwardness, nerdiness, sexiness, and humorous hijinks as she finds herself being drug through the jungle by an oftentimes overzealous Alan. The two bond as they go down cliffs, wade through jungle waters, and climb mountains as the evil cabal of Abigail Fairfax's men are in hot pursuit.

Eventually, Loretta finds that she's holding the cards as she stumbles across relics of inscriptions that unlock the location of the treasure. As she slowly starts to come around the adventure of a lifetime, struggling to suppress feelings for the equally awkward but well-meaning Alan, Loretta figures out where the treasure actually is.

From there, I’m going to leave the rest of the details to you to look up, or better yet, see it at the movie theater. I’ll say that Sandra Bullock shined and Channing Tatum was at his best in years in The Lost City. The cast of supporting characters was excellent and Daniel Radcliffe as an evil billionaire was superb.

The movie is wrought full of emotions as Loretta is on an emotional journey that leads her to the situation she is in, and she and Alan slowly begin to realize the feelings that have been underlying during their years working together. If you haven’t seen the movie, or haven't seen a trailer, check it out below. This is a great movie for couples, friends, or just to escape reality and get away from home for a couple of hours to laugh, cry, and celebrate the hero's triumphs.
