The Return of Dexter: SPOILER ALERT

What's the damage?

September 22nd 2013. The final episode of Dexter, season 8 airs on television and fans are pissed. The series was very much a fan favourite for years but had been declining in it's most recent years due to some shaky story lines and the conviction of character deaths that lead viewers asking...why?

But, that question became even more common amongst viewers when the finale aired 7 years ago and left us all wondering:

What the f*** was that.

If you are a Dexter fan (which I assume you are, that's why you're here) then you will understand my dismay. After some epic seasons (The Trinity Killer being at the top) we were left with a boring, mediocre and easy ending to the 8 seasons of ruthless killing. Suddenly, Miami's most prolific killer, dumps his last body in the Ocean (His sister Deb) having just suffered her loss, leaves his son with a killer and steers off into the storm...quite literally.

Many fans, including myself, held their head tight in their hands watching the dismal display of mediocre writing and lack of conviction when watching the final episode. Dexter, the trophy collecting, sarcastic, unhinged killer, that hated parting with his son and couldn't go more than a few weeks in most cases without a kill, suddenly leaves his son, fakes his death and goes ten years without a kill?

Yes, 10 years. If you haven't realised already...SPOILER ALERT!

Dexter: New Blood returned to our screens earlier this month and my first impressions left me underwhelmed to say the least. But, I wasn't left disappointed.

A miniseries developed for Showtime, the excitement that filled both me and other fans alike when the news was revealed late last year, was enough to make us lose a wink or two of sleep, just thinking about the ways in which the writing would pan out. Now, it's not easy to forget how Dexter was left. But, Dexter fans are real, we are forgiving (After the Deb killing, we have to be) so we had high hopes. And so far, we haven't been left disappointed.

When I sat down to watch episode 1, immediately I noticed a big difference. Not only is Michael. C. Hall obviously older (aren't we all) he also looked...calm, peaceful and at one point I thought maybe a picket fence would be part of his daily routine. Luckily however, that wasn't the case.

Set in the fictitious town of Iron Lake (which is actually a real place in New York state), Dexter: now going by Jim, has settled down with the local cop (Yep!) and is now living in a cabin in the woods and working in an arms dealership. His 'dark passenger' is now his sister Deb (Thank the writers for getting the much loved Jennifer Carpenter back) but he no longer appears to have his own voice narrating inside his head.

The opening half hour leaves you wondering what happened to the old Dexter and when he tells himself through his dark passenger (Carpenter) that he hasn't killed in ten years, I was almost ready to switch off. Bullshit. No narrating, no killing, married to a copper and taking shit from a real daddy's boy, rich dickhead. I was ready to pull out and rant immediately over the internet about the lack of conviction in the writing...and then.

The rich boy shot a deer.

Yes, a deer, a rare white deer. A Seneca white deer to be precise that are rare in New York.

A quick smack in the smug little bastards face and suddenly...Dexter is back. The narration starts again, the blood lines the perfect white snow and you see Dexter's mind ticking once more.

A small montage of plastic lining fill his little log shed and the knives come out. The funny, quirky, brutal character of Michael. C. Hall returns, his narration and low pitch voice are exactly what all fans have missed and the sound of a knife entering his victim is something we have all waited for (Not a sociopath). Oh and did I forget to mention Harrison turns up?

With that, it seems Dexter's new Ice Fishing spot is his new 'dumping ground' and the start of what I hope to be a season full of crime and death. Unfortunately, it's well known this season is a 'miniseries'. But, if you're are a fan and you've already watched episode 1, then like me I'm sure you're secretly wanting more.

If you haven't watched episode 1 yet then what the hell are you doing here? Cheating for the gossip tut tut. But if you have accidentally stumbled across this article and you are not a Dexter fan, I urge you to reconsider.

Bath tub deaths, suicide, ritual killings, donuts and surprise mother fu**er. Give it a go, you won't be disappointed. (Just maybe a little at the end).
