The Patriot Games: A Totally Original, Definitely Not Dystopian, Celebration of American Athletics

You can bomb us, torture us, burn our districts to the ground. But just remember, fire is catching, and when we burn, you burn with us.” — Katniss Everdeen

Is This the Reaping?

We have finally reached a period in the timeline of our universe when idiocracy is at an all-time high. A recent announcement from the current administration has sparked a ripple effect of discourse among our population. A discourse of excitement from one side and a sign of distaste from the other. Unfortunately, preparations are in order for fall 2026, as a four-day athletic event promises to showcase the “best” of American high school talent.

Thankfully, my generation has taken a non-serious approach and is currently laughing at all of this. Because why not? Our adulthood and fantasy of living have already been stripped from us; might as well laugh to keep from crying.

To put it simply, we are all living in a two-hour-long movie that should have ended a long, long time ago.

Just to be clear, the concept behind “The Patriot Games” is to select one young man and one young woman from each state and territory to compete at a national level. This concept has been praised by “interesting” supporters as a display of national unity and youth athleticism. However, for those of us who have spent a little too much time with young adult fiction, the structure of this event has an uncanny resemblance to the Hunger Games.

For those unfamiliar, the story takes place in the totalitarian Capitol, which forces its twelve districts of Panem to offer up one boy and one girl, known as the “tributes”, to fight to the death live in front of millions. While the Patriot Games serve as an athletic competition for, well, deathly mortal combat, the selection process remains similar. The idea of 50+ states and territories sending the chosen few to a central, televised arena for entertainment is a narrative that we thought would be explored only in fiction, making its debut in real-world policy a fascinating, but also stupid and scary, but mostly stupid idea.

The Reaping, Redefined: Our New Tributes

To highlight the humorously thin line between reality and satire, I present a comparison of the Hunger Games and the Partriot Games in the table below.

The Arena and the Spectacle

Unfortunately, the specific athletic events have not been fully detailed; we can only imagine the kind of challenges that will be shown. Will they be traditional sports like track and field, or satirical events such as an extreme flag-folding relay, a competitive reading of the Constitution, or a heated debate on why the Electoral College is still relevant?

I don't think any of us prepared for what is to come. Our country has become a spectacle of crazy misfortunes, and our generation has learned to just cope with the changes. It's not that we don't want change, we want it to be subtle and beneficial for all people. However, in the meantime, I guess expressing our emotions through memes and think pieces is what is keeping us sane, for now.

At this time, it is safe for us to think positively and not share in the world's chaos. We need a few more sane and intelligent people to carry us through.

So, let this be a reminder that, whether in a fictional dystopia or in real-world events, this is the most unserious time for many of us; we must be vigilant and strategic as to how we move around in this world. So, as we look forward to the Fall of 2026,

May the odds be ever in your favor.

If you think we are in an unserious time, please drop a comment and share your thoughts.
