The Outsiders Feature Film Cast (1983)

The Outsiders, written by S. E. Hinton, is the story of Ponyboy Curtis and his experience with the conflict between the "greaser" gang he's loosely in and the opposing group called the "Soc's." The book was adapted for the silver screen and has been performed on the stage. But now is the time for this impactful piece of literature to reach the final STAGE of its performance potential. Here are three reasons The Outsiders should be the next book that was adapted to film to be adapted into a musical.

The first reason The Outsiders should be a musical is that the book has deep roots in the American school system and helped shape a generation with its film release. So many students read the book in school, and that guarantees an audience for the show. The Outsiders holds a special place in the hearts of the many who read this book in school. Also, the film had a cast consisting of actor icons that held symbolism in the 1980s. This show can do the same for upcoming theater actors to make their mark in such a powerful social commentary piece. Don't we deserve to have such a cherished work celebrated again with beautiful music attached?

The second reason is fiscal, because come on, what isn't about money in some aspect. Broadway has been in decline for a while. The popularity of high-end stage shows comes in waves, and sometimes going to see a Broadway musical can burn a hole in the pocket of the average consumer. Unfortunately, to keep making extravagant and well put together shows with great casts, money is something desperately needed if the professional theater is to survive. It has taken a while, but the recent resurgence in young adult-focused musicals have helped re-engage the average view. Musicals like Hamilton and Be More Chill have helped change the genetic makeup of audiences, making musical theater more accessible. Where The Outsiders comes in is that there is nostalgia backing this material and its youth-focused plot. Media, and for this case, musicals, that captivate the nostalgic audience member have a real chance of succeeding in today's entertainment market. Also, developing a show that could have its rights purchased by high schools for their theater seasons helps create more support for youth theater.

The final reason is more based in the imagination. Today there are so many talented music writers that are pumping out amazing musicals like Dear Evan Hansen, Waitress, Hadestown, and so many more. Just think of the beautiful music that could be sung by beloved characters of Ponyboy his family and his friends. I can see myself tearing up as Johnny sings his last song and the feeling of hope and love that radiate from the Curtis brothers. The heart of a show is what matters, and this is a story that is overflowing with it.

In conclusion, due to financial, creative, and nostalgic purposes, the book The Outsiders should be the next great adapted musical to hit the stage.

Update:

For the 2019/2020 season, The Outsiders Musical will premiere in the Goodman Theater in Chicago. The show has undergone extensive workshopping, which shows a lot of love and care has been placed into the project. The show will be directed by Liesl Tommy, and the book written by Adam Rapp with music and lyrics by Jonathan Clay, Zach Chance, and Justin Levine. Plus, the Choreographer, Lorin Latarro has credits with the hit Broadway musical Waitress. While it seems this brand new musical has no aspirations beyond its Chicago premiere, its talented creative team are something of note. Connections to Hollywood films and other New York musical projects as well as Tony-nominations and awards in their reviewer provide confidence that this show is in good hands. For now, The Outsiders will be running from June 20 until August 2 of 2020, so if you get the chance, go check it out. Maybe Ponyboy and his friend's story of survival and quest for meaning in life will eventually get that Broadway debut and inspire another generation of restless youth looking for purpose.
