One night of 1916 a man named Felix Yusupov invited a holy man to dinner but that was only upfront, intention of host was to murder his guest. But why does on earth someone wanted to kill a priest? The priest was to blame for the fate of an empire.

Early life

To understand this let’s go back to the early ages of the priest. His name was Grigori Rasputin and was born in 1869 in a Siberian Village, it was one of the coldest and difficult places to live and survival was a constant struggle, Rasputin mother gave birth to seven children but all of them died at child birth or infancy, he was actually the first one to survive Siberia harsh winter. From the young age he proclaimed himself to be the man of God that angel appeared in his dreams he would heal horses just by merely touching them which was enough evidence for villagers to believe him, but meanwhile he had a reputation of bad behavior and abusive alcoholic in his early twenties.

He was married in 19 and had 4 children by the age of 28. He met a man named Makarij who influenced him to change his behavior and follow the path of God, he spent years pilgrimage across Russia and visited the city of Jerusalem going as far as Greece on his travels stranger were captivated by his presence. By the time he returned he was a changed man he had given up alcohol, meat and tobacco. But the question remains how on earth a simple peasant born monk wanderer be accused for the fall of Romanov Dynasty?

Travel to St. Petersburg

One day in 1900 Rasputin claimed that the Virgin Mary has appeared in his dream and told him to go to St. Petersburg and help the royal family. He used up the connection of Mikarij who turned out to be the former religious advisor to the Romanovs. Mikarij sent an introduction to his friends in St. Peterburg and Rasputin went along to meet them, he met Bishop Hermogen and Sergei Trufanov the royal priests who was intimated by his piercing eyes but once they saw his healing abilities, they believed him to be the man of God, he ultimately become the friends with the Princess Milica and Anastasia of Montenegro who introduced him to queen Alexandra.

Healing of Hemophilia

The only heir to the Romanov’s throne, Alexei was diagnosed with hemophilia leaving parents, The King and The Queen grieving in distress. One day, health of prince worsened and the medicine prescribed by doctors had no effect, upon hearing, Rasputin entered the royal palace out of nowhere and demanded to see the prince alone so that he could use his healing powers on prince and stopped the aspirin prescribed by doctors, almost immediately prince Alexi was healed. this was enough reason for the royal family to believe in his magical powers, he was victorious in securing his first impression. This opens the doors of the entrance into the royal palace. With time he was able to gain trust of the royal family and he started visiting the palace more often.

Assassination

Former royal priest Sergei Trufanov planted a murder due to Rasputin’s reputation as alcoholic, petty theft and promiscuity spread across the region which somehow had no effect on the royal family. But this cost Trufanov his reputation as he was one of the priests who allowed Rasputin into the St. Petersburg. He hired an assassin to kill Rasputin in his village, assassin stabbed him repeatedly and even dug a hand in his stomach to pull out his intestines, Rasputin was saved by the surgery performed by a doctor

By the time WW1 started and Rasputin advised the Romanov to not go to war with Germans but instead made peace with them, but we all know WW1 was devastating, millions of Russian men died in the war people were struggling to find work and price of bread was doubled. On theses grieving times Rasputin predicted that if he were to die, this would be the end of Romanovs

Death

Felix Yousapov was the nephew of queen Alexandra and he was one of the many who despised Rasputin as he has heard his reputation with the ladies, one day he and his fellow conspirators invited Rasputin to the party, they took him to the basement saying queen Alexandra is upstairs and would shortly join them for the healing ceremony, they offered him pieces of cakes and glasses of wine, they were actually planning to murder Rasputin and all of the food and drinks were filled with cyanide. But to the amassment of Yousapov, Rasputin ate and drink without feeling anything. Upon seeing this Yousapav panicked and rushed upstairs to grab his revolver, he came back to see Rasputin, he was calmly looking at him with his piercing eyes, he did not beg for his life but stand straight with his head high, Yousapov shot him and left him there, after some time Yousapov had change of heart and came back with the doctor to check his pulse, to their amazement Rasputin was alive and he rushed to grab yousapov, Yousapov pushed Rasputin aside and called on his friend, Rasputin tried to escape but yousapav shot him point blank in his head following with the bullets of five other guns of his friends, they dumped his body into the river and when the body was found there were water in his lungs suggested he was still alive

As he predicted, none of the Romanovs were left alive following the revolution of 1917 and Russia never remained the same again. Was all of this due to prediction of monk or the inevitable nature of politics? the question still remains but Rasputin surely left a mark on the history whether as a mad man, monk or healer
