The avatar of Death now exists in the mortal world as twenty-something Laila Starr after humanity begins the path to discovering immortality.

* Years pass, and Laila unexpectedly meets the boy who will change everything at one of the formative moments in his life.

* Laila must decide what she truly wants from him -- and how far these revelations will push her...

This is such a charming book. There is an inescapable charm to seeing Laila trying to figure out how to live like a normal human. This issue she meets someone who understands her dilemma and is in the same boat that she’s in, being on the verge of extinction, well just downsized from the job and life she’s always known. Kah is an amazing character and companion for Laila during this stage of her life and I do hope that the pair continue to be friend throughout the run of the book. There is an interesting look at the caste system here as well, the hired help should remain outside not to be allowed in and shunned basically, not to be seen nor heard and to me that’s deplorable. Still it engages the reader in some wonderful ways and makes you think and wonder about what we’re seeing.

I love the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. The character development is phenomenal! The dialogue, narration, the character interaction as well as how they act and react to the situations and circumstances they encounter really do wonders in fleshing them out. So much information in such a warm and natural way that we get a true understanding of these people and this culture. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages enlightening us on Darius, his family and his life as well as the impact of what he does on the future to our two new friends.

How we see this being structured and how the layers within the story continue to grow, strengthen and emerge is so wonderfully rendered. Ram really pulls out all the stops here and it’s such a beautifully written story. The way we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is achieved so perfectly well.

The interiors here are absolutely delightful. The linework is sensational and how we see the varying weights and techniques utilised to create this lovely detail work is extraordinary to see. That we have backgrounds utilised so judiciously, there could be tons more though, and how they work within the composition of the panels to bring us this depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story is greatly achieved. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling. The colour work is fabulous. The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is so well rendered. The eye for colour is sensational and it really makes moments stand out so much more.

The more we see and learn the more I want to see and learn and that’s the beauty of good storytelling. Enough is never enough and to see Laila doing what she does and experiencing life as a mortal really is the way to forever change how you view the work you did and the work you will do. This is is so well written as it engages the reader in some wondrous ways and makes them not just think but use their own creativity and imagination as they become more and more involved in what is seen.
