Genesis

Krypton orbited a red dwarf star, 27 light-years away from Earth named Rao. The Green Lantern Corps had designated Krypton as part of Space Sector 2813 and Green Lantern Tomar-Re policed the sector at the time of its destruction.

Early Kryptonians were nearly identical to humans and lived on a harsh, unforgivable world. 200,000 years ago, early Krypton was home to the deadliest creatures in the universe that were the dominant life-forms on the planet. It was for this reason that a mad scientist, an alien named Bertron, chose early Krypton as the base for the creation of the ultimate life-form. (Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey #3)

Through a process of forced evolution, Bertron and his scientists sent a baby to the surface of the planet, where it would be instantly killed by the deadly creatures living in the harsh environment. Every time, the remains of the life-form were harvested to create a better, stronger version. Bertron used the process of cloning in order to accelerate the evolution of the life-form. The memory of its agonies - its thousands and its thousands of deaths was recorded in the creatures' genes to the point that it came to hate all life. (Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey #3)

Finally, the life-form learned to evolve from the attacks that killed it previously without the need from Bertron's technology. The creature hunted and killed all the deadly creatures that killed it in its past life, eradicating them from Krypton. The Ultimate was born! (Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey #3)

The Ultimate returned to Bertron's lab per its genetic programming. When it saw Bertron and his team of scientists, he remembered all the countless deaths the scientists caused him and saw them as a threat. Bertron and the scientists died. (Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey #3)

Eventually, The Ultimate found a cargo ship that used to deliver supplies to Bertron and his lab. He boarded the cargo ship and escaped Krypton for Bylan 5. The Ultimate went on a killing spree on multiple planets. He ended up fighting the Green Lantern Corps and killing several hundred of them before being defeated by the Radiant on Calaton and entombed. Finally, the Ultimate was sent to space and crash landed on Earth. (DC Database)

It is there that the creature became Doomsday, named so by Booster Gold.

Kryptonians Become The Dominant Race

Doomsday eradicated the harsh creatures that lived on Krypton. With its creation, Krypton had mastered cloning and Kryptonians came to be the dominant race on the planet Krypton. Over 100,000 years ago, Krypton had developed significant scientific achievements far beyond those of present-day Earth and within a few millennia had conquered disease, learned to delay the aging process, and perfected cloning; "vast banks of non-sentient clones held multiple copies of each living Kryptonian so that replacement parts were always available in the case of injury." (DC Database)

All Kryptonians were in fact immortal and lived in a veritable paradise. (DC Database)

Krypton became an expanding empire that conquered other planets for years. Its military leader was General Dru-Zod who commanded entire fleets seeking to conquer new worlds. Three hundred years ago, General Dru-Zod's Sunstone ship the Doomsday crash-landed in an area that is today Texas where it laid buried beneath the ground for centuries. Krypton's Golden Age ended with the Kryptonian Empire being revoked due to their methods being too harsh. (DC Database)

The Duels

After the events of 'Crisis On Infinite Earths', Doomsday and Superman duel in the streets of Metropolis. After managing to free itself from its entombment deep within the Earth, Doomsday beat the Justice League with one hand tied behind its back; only Maxima managed to hold her own. According to 'Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey #3', Doomsday had sensed the presence of Superman, and knowing he was a Kryptonian, a threat to his life, Doomsday sought to eradicate his race.

Unable to defeat the monster, Superman uses the Mother Box to send Doomsday and him, to the end of time. As Waverider later stated, Doomsday was "beyond conventional death" and only at the end of time was it possible to defeat the monster. (Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey #3)

Was Doomsday a monster? Yes. Was Doomsday a weapon of evolution? Perhaps.
