Never underestimate the greatest love story ever told.

Released to Netflix in 2021, The Last Letter from Your Lover interconnects two love stories. Examining old letters written by two lovers, Ellie is determined to track down the couple who never thought anything would break apart their romance.

I had no idea what to expect when I decided to watch this film. The Last Letter from Your Lover is a beautiful story that defines love. Nobody ever knows the true definition of love until experimenting with their own tales.

Shailene Woodley surmounts a remarkable range. Jenny’s fighting attitude was delivered wonderfully by Woodley. Woodley studies Jenny’s perseverance, and also a meek behavior that was a total contrast.

The chemistry between Woodley and Callum Turner was engrossing. Their interactions were studied well, creating an electric romance. One of my favorite aspects about Jenny and Anthony’s relationship is that they test one another to new limits.

At first, I predicted that the two love stories were not going to connect. I assumed that the modern-day scenes would portray the evolution of love and women’s roles. While I was right about women’s roles, the film surprised me.

Felicity Jones is remarkable as Ellie. She portrays a fighting spirit like no other. Fascinated by the letters, Ellie finds herself on an unexpected quest. Fierce and snarky, there is more to Ellie than that.

In my opinion, this film should have focused on just one love story. I know the story was making a point about giving love a chance, but I didn’t feel any chemistry between Ellie and Rory (Nabheen Rizwan). The modern love story was missing something. It also felt too sudden. It would have worked if Ellie and Rory had more history instead of just meeting.

Other credits include Joe Alwyn, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, Ncuti Gatwa, Diana Kent, and the final film of the late Ben Cross. My one complaint about this film is with the ensemble. They’re there to fill in as friends or co-workers and that’s it.

For example, Jenny’s friends just disappear out of the film when they could have been more useful to the story. The film becomes so entranced by the love story between Jenny and Anthony that it focuses only on them in the middle half of the story.

The best locations were picked to film in. As a fan of sunsets, this film is packed with beautiful sunsets. Filmmakers designed scenes that took place in the 60s to resemble the time period. Special mention goes to the costume department for all the gorgeous attire.

Augustine Frizzell captures the romantic atmosphere. She found excellent music selections, locations, and conquered the best cinematography. Frizzell also paid close attention to the pacing. There is never a dull moment. Every sequence is well-directed, investing in the characters and the dialogue.

Similar to love, never give up on a project. Bring the past back to life. Another angle that The Last Letter from Your Lover explores is the world of writing. Journalism is more than writing. It leads to opening discoveries. I was entranced, taking in all the beautifully written letters.

The Last Letter from Your Lover signifies love. Give it a try. And if you fail, try again. I was worried that this was going to turn into a sappy love story, but it didn’t. It’s a feel-good film. I could not stop smiling. I didn’t want it to end. I have not felt that feeling in a long time.

I highly recommend that you find The Last Letter from Your Lover on Netflix. It makes a wonderful date night film.
