'The Iron Claw' is a profound exploration of familial bonds, loss, and redemption.

Never be afraid of emotions no matter who you are.

Winning the match, The Iron Claw is a 2023 film. Based on the true story of the Von Erich, they are a family of wrestlers. Tragedy after tragedy strikes the family but they are committed to being the best wrestlers in the intense competitions.

The Iron Claw is not just a story about wrestling. As I have learned, there’s more to the world of wrestling. The Von Erich’s have created an enduring legacy across the world of wrestling. At its core, The Iron Claw is a profound exploration of familial bonds, loss, and redemption.

Starring a stellar cast, Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, Stanley Simons, Holt McCallany, Lily James, and Maura Tierney delve deep into raw emotions and pay respects to the real family. The Von Erich’s have weathered tragedy that no family ever wants to endure.

Zac Efron is compelling as Kevin Von Erich. He went through immense training for this film, gaining massive muscles. I have never seen Efron in a role like this. Kevin has a lot of pressure carrying the weight of the family legacy on his shoulders. I hope the Oscars don’t overlook this film because Efron deserves a nomination, specifically for his stirring final scene.

Not only Efron, but other actors did ample training. The acting is solemn and praised with nuanced portrayals. They create a believable trio of siblings bound by both love and rivalry.

Lily James and Maura Tierney merit shoutouts for breaking layers and dodging slipping into stereotypes. James’s fierce attitude as Pam adds emotional resonance to the narrative. I will never forget one audience member’s delighted reaction when Tierney’s character denies her husband’s staunch requests. Stand your ground.

I winced at the painful wrestling sequences. Not only are they choreographed splendidly, but they are visually captivating. Thanks to the film's exceptional cinematography and precise direction, it enriches the emotional impact of each match and training session. Eventually, the family drama consumes the wrestling scenes. There’s not enough focus in the latter half.

The Iron Claw is more emotional than I anticipated. Death is a prominent theme. It was hard watching the deaths, especially the family’s reactions. The film felt overloaded the more tragedies that occurred but that’s when you realize that it’s based on true events. These catastrophes happened in real life to a family.

Upon researching the history of the Von Erich family, writers omitted one sibling. Although having all the facts right is necessary, it would have elongated the film and repeated more sad scenes than we already needed.

The scene that got me was the brothers reuniting in a significant setting. The scene was sincere and impactful. One of Sean Durkin’s most commendable aspects is its message about male emotions. The Iron Claw breaks down stereotypes and encourages its male characters, as well as the audience, to confront and express their emotions.

Due to their father’s strict rules about masculinity and stoicism, the boys are not allowed to show emotions. Crying does not make anyone weak. It’s okay to show emotions, especially in front of people. If anyone gives you a hard time, it’s not their business.

Is there a reason why The Iron Claw has been overlooked in award season so far? This movie had better get the recognition it deserves because the film presents an important story from history.

It does not matter if you’re not a fan of wrestling. It’s a chance to learn more about the craft. Go see The Iron Claw while it’s in theaters.
