The Comic Book Accuracy of WandaVision

Panel to Screen

This is a bold statement but I am just going to say it, WandaVision is the most comic book accurate piece of Marvel media ever produced. In major ways and in more subtle accuracies, WandaVision raised the bar for blending the MCU and the comics and truly showed what it meant to appreciate the source material and stay true to the characters while still telling a story that does them justice.

Darcy refers to Wanda’s version of Westview as “the hex” ; this is an obvious reference to the original definition of Wanda’s powerset, hex magic.

“Who's the popsicle” Pietro’s first line in reference to Vision was a nickname comic Pietro often used to refer to Vision. That said the WandaVision version of Pietro was actually the most comic book accurate version of Pietro we’ve seen thus far in any live action personality wise. He’s childish, blunt and kind of an ass, which is VERY accurate. Comic book Pietro is a HUGE dick and they really played into that.

Halloween Costumes! Call it fanservice but everyone wearing comic book accurate costumes was amazing to see and gave us even more tie to the source material.

Pietro’s line “Raise hell demon spawn” was a delightful call to the fact that in the comics the boys were born out of pieces of Mephisto’s soul. Many fans thought that this meant there would be an appearance by Mephisto but that turned out to not be the case (GOOD!).

Comic Book accurate superpowers for the boys! Wiccan has similar powers to his mom, it's actually said that he has the potential to be more powerful though the comics have not actually shown anything that proves that yet. And Speed of course has the same powers as Quicksilver.

The boys un-aliving and re-aliving; Now we haven't actually seen the boys again but in the comics they disappeared and then reappeared to different families. Now at the end of Wanda Vision they disappeared with the hex but in the final end credit scene when we see Wanda astral projecting we also hear the boys calling out for help, we also know Marvel plans on bringing the young avengers into the MCU which pretty much guarantees that we will see Wiccan and Speed again.

Agatha’s role; In the comics Agatha was never all good or all bad, she was in a moral grey area that the best Marvel characters tend to live in, she was also Wanda’s magic mentor (we see a teeny little bit of that when wanda adds sigils to the edges of her hex), and even more than that several times in the comics Agatha’s powers have transferred to Wanda which we got to see and I have a feeling we will see again as I do not believe we are done with Agatha’s character in the MCU.

Chaos magic: Chaos Magic is Wanda’s main source of power and the kind of magic that Agatha trained her in, it's also a direct tie to Chthon who was the author of the darkhold, which we’ve also seen so his involvement or the involvement of the physical manifestation of Chaos may be imminent.

Scarlet Witch’s origin; Now there are a couple versions of this origin story as we know but I think what the show did so well was leave the door open for both of them to be true. Her original origin was being a mutant and the daughter of Magneto which they set up with the mention that the reason the bomb that her and Pietro stared at for 2 days didn’t go off was due to Wanda’s probability manipulation powers (again an original comic book definition of her powers) and the mention that power has always been inherently in her. The newer version of her origin was that the title of The Scarlet Witch was a hereditary mantle that was passed down, WandaVision gave us pieces of this origin as well.

Vision v Vision; Now WandaVision took some very needed liberties with this one but they still gave us some comic book crumbs. There was a Vision centric storyline in the comics that basically caused him to lose his feelings for Wanda, but another hero Wonderman fell in love with her because he shared Vision's memories. So here we have White Vision who was programmed for nothing other than Wanda’s destruction but then the hex version of Vision, the one that contained all of real Vision’s memories and love and affection for Wanda unlocked that piece of White Vision’s programming, giving him access to those same memories. So it's possible that Wanda will get Vision back; it will just be a different version of him.

There are of course more little detailed ones but these are the ones that stuck out and the ones I think will continue to be relevant to Wanda and her future in the MCU.
