Okay we only have a few episodes left in this last season of The Boys. So this is where it starts to get dicey because there are only 3 episodes left after this and there is still so much to do. I am getting very concerned about pacing. I have been loving the individual episodes so far but how they come together is a lot more important and I am not sure they are doing great with the overall story. I choose to have hope but it's not looking good.
We ended the last episode by introducing Homelander to the general public as a prophet…at the democratic church of America. We really leaned into the christian nationalism.
The fact that Homelander wants something insane and the people around him are desperately trying to find avenues that work with the delusions and stupidity of the general public. But Homelander wants everyone to call him God right now, immediately.
Firecracker leaves the Vought meeting to go have coffee with her reverend…interesting. He is forcing her to confront what she actually believes and what she’s been conditioned to shill. And he tries to show her that her fear is getting in the way of her faith. And that’s how to do a satire of religious nationalists. You show what actual religion is supposed to look like. And we see Firecracker turn her back on everything she believes and the people she loves because of how terrified she is of Homelander. Now let’s all remember that this IS commentary, every single little bit of this show is commenting on something. Homelander has big scary superpowers…not standing up to dictators due to anything short of being exploded from the inside out is cowardice.
The writing this season is getting…eh. It was bad last season also but it keeps getting worse. Not only are we having to endure Kimiko talking about sex and porn 24/7 when that is SO out of character but now we’re getting part of this episode written from the perspective of the dog…literally why?
To directly contrast what I just said, I think all of the good writing went into the character arcs this season. A-Train’s was great, I love Annie’s and now MM talking about how he beat his OCD was simply accepting his fate. He knows that this war with Homelander is going to have collateral damage and he knows that they are the collateral damage. The likelihood that any of the boys come out of this alive is so small. And that is a piece of writing I hope they don’t fuck off. I really need them to stick to their stakes. Members of the main cast NEED to die. That is the only way this narrative is gonna be satisfying or well written at all.
The episode being from different perspectives is fine but there was 0 reason to include the dog. It could have been from the perspective of literally anyone else in that group and using the dog feels like an extremely cheap attempt at humor. It feels lazy and honestly it feels disrespectful to the characters.
Sage seems to be operating on the idea that as long as she lets Homelander do whatever he wants at least he will 1) be distracted and 2) run himself into the ground with other supes and the general public. Sage’s master plan is revealed and I sort of LOVE that the master plan is getting everyone to leave her alone. She wants everyone dead. Humans, supes she doesn’t care she just wants everyone away from her.
Also there is no reason we needed this many perspectives for this episode. It just makes it feel choppy. First show or movie to portray LA accurately by the way.
I love that I finally got Jared Padalecki and I was not expecting to see Misha so my little SuperWhoLock heart was VERY happy. These men shaped damn near all my formative years. I watched Supernatural when it was first airing and then lost track of it, and rewatched from the beginning to the end (which at the time was season 10) in college. I went to a convention and meeting Jared was one of the greatest moments of my life.
Not Soldier Boy siding with Homelander, well that’s the worst possible thing that could have happened. Like genuinely this is terrible. Them developing an actual father-son relationship was not on my bingo card and I would like to return it thank you.
Homelander found out that Firecracker is having a faith crisis and of course he takes that as an insult. Which obviously leads to her death. So they’ve done a decent job with step 1: people close to the resistance and Homelander are dying and that's great, but meaningless with no follow through.
