The Boys Season 5

Episode 3

By Alexandrea CallaghanPublished 6 months ago • 4 min read

Okay so we have set up a lot with these first two episodes; the virus works but on super strong supes it is a temporary deterrent. My current theory is that they use the virus to slow Homelander down enough for Marie to take him out. We still have yet to see any of the Gen V kids and we should remember that Godolkin is also out there roaming around somewhere. While Homelander is rounding up American citizens for disagreeing with and criticizing him…ya know like every dictator ever. Super off topic but remember when Donald Trump tweeted about how late night hosts shouldn’t be allowed to make jokes about the president of the united states? Weird, don’t know what made me think of that, anyway….

Homelander is very clearly losing his mind. Soldier Boy was getting all of the attention and so Homelander reveals to the press that he’s Soldier Boy’s son because he has a pathological need for attention. And because he has so many mommy and daddy issues Homelander is still so terrified of Soldier Boy and simultaneously so desperate for his approval.

Soldier Boy surviving the virus because of the first iteration of V, is the first real connection that we have between The Boys and Gen V. Now we are all in a race for a vial of V1.

Look Soldier Boy is his own brand of awful but the way that he is able to break Homelander down psychologically is so satisfying to watch.

I am in love with MM not giving a fuck because he’s 100% correct, you either help us kill Homelander or you will be the reason everyone dies. Complacency has no place in a revolution. You are either actively fighting oppression or you are actively contributing to it. Doing nothing IS contributing to oppression.

I sort of love that core of Homelander being as awful as he is is the fact that he wasn’t loved as a child. Also Homelander comparing himself to Jesus is super on the nose but extremely necessary.

So here's the problem with so much time between seasons in general, The Boys keeps up a pretty good schedule actually, but puberty has hit these children like a truck and it sort of messes with the in-universe timeline.

“He’s not even that good looking” says The Deep about Soldier Boy…sir…that’s Jensen Ackles, easily one of the hottest men on the planet. Coming from Chase Crawford is even funnier. We love you Nate Archibald.

Butcher and Ryan reuniting was not exactly unexpected but it certainly feels a little out of place. I understand that Ryan was kind of another loose end, but we’ve clearly been gearing up for these Gen V kids to come into the story and it just feels like they are finding excuses to put that off as long as possible and it feels unnecessary.

Zoe gets reunited with her dad which is wonderful, it's a very sweet moment. These are the moments where it feels like the narrative gets time to breathe a little. Kimiko letting them go however…it was in character but it was stupid. Truly, astonishingly stupid.

Sage has clearly realized that Homelander has snapped and she no longer has any control over him whatsoever.

Jensen Ackles….looks good.

Never saw the destruction of the virus coming and I sort of hate it. This really comes down to the fact that this show could have been a tight and consistent 3 seasons. Season 4 was a total waste of time, and this whole we’re gonna kill Homelander, oops didn’t work is getting really old and repetitive.

The other thing we are seeing happening this season is our crew getting whacked in the face with consequences of their past actions. Lying about Homelander killing Neumann when it was Butcher, then lying about killing the invisible dude in season one when it was also Butcher. And now all of these actions are coming back to bite them in the ass. And it's great because yes, they are good guys in the context of the show and no one they killed was exactly innocent but still.

Annie is my favorite character forever and always, her character arc is so wonderfully written and they have made her character so layered and complicated I am so in love with it.

Ryan coming after Homelander for raping his mom is the best thing that could possibly come out of this show. Good for you kiddo.

Okay…we finally give Kimiko a voice, she actually gets to speak and everything out of her mouth is vulgar and sexual. Why did we think that was a good idea? Who thought that was remotely acceptable?

My sweet Annie is going after the V1 on her own. Ryan is beaten to hell but at least he’s with Butcher. Damn this season is a ride. So far so good, it is definitely already better than a single second we got last season.
