The Boys - Commentary and Analysis

Season 3

The season opens with some really weird gratuitous nudity, sex and violence. The show is getting bolder as it keeps getting renewed, each season gets a little more gore and sex oriented which I hear is super close to the comics.

Huey and Starlight are apparently in a shiny happy relationship and honestly it's so boring. Their relationship adds nothing to their individual characters or to the story as a whole. I just think that Starlight is more interesting and compelling as a character without being attached to Huey romantically. Them as friends is fine but romantically they just don’t make a whole lot of sense to me.

Butchers goes and visits and takes care of Ryan which I think is the most character development we’ve seen from anyone on this show.

Vought is still trying to push compound V into the military, now a temporary version to juice soldiers up with.

Vought making Starlight co-captain of the 7 is amazing for about a million reasons but it really just brings me joy to see Homelander squirm. For a show that’s called “The Boys” the only characters that are competent or worth caring about are the women. Starlight having power over the 7 is a wonderful, poignant representation of equality.

Mauve and Butcher are in cahoots, Mauve gets intel on shitty supes and Butcher takes them down.

Starlight finally standing toe to toe with Homelander is so incredible, it fills my whole body with joy. “This is a poor attempt at making me look like a sex doll and not a co-captain” she is aware, and strong and I am so happy for her.

Nice, quick commentary on the industry of adoption; the fact that picking out and buying children is super gross. Nadia, the congress woman, was apparently adopted by the current leader of Vought.

This bitch really just compared himself to Jesus. The fucking God complex on Homelander is so disturbing. The entirety of this show’s plot could be avoided by a team of well trained therapists.

Starlight tries so desperately to make Homelander more palatable on his stupid birthday special but he absolutely loses his mind on live television. He exposes himself as a narcissistic jack wang with a God complex.

Homelander decides to rebrand himself by telling the world that he's in a relationship with Starlight, disgusting for many reasons, but she decides to go with it. Huey and Starlight decided to do anything to take Homelander down. It's both interesting and heartbreaking to watch Starlight go this far, for her to just decide that there is no way to remain a good person and be a part of taking Homelander down is very upsetting. She does eventually find her voice and insist upon holding on to her integrity and I am so proud of her.

Huey and Butcher have very different experiences and thoughts after they come down from the compound V. Butcher loved having the power to take down supes but he hated being one. Huey loved not being scared, he loved actually being helpful and not fearing for his life.

Mauve and Butcher sleeping together is one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever seen in my life. Mauve you are better than this girl…get it together.

It seems that being attacked by Soldier Boy somehow took away Kimiko’s powers, so he is in fact a weapon now the team just needs to figure out how to point him at Homelander.

Butcher gets to talk to Soldier Boy after offering up The Crimson Countess as bait, where she basically begs him to kill her, and then he does. Starlight really needs to dump Huey, I am so so over it. She is so much better without him.

Homelander finding out that Soldier Boy is alive was interesting to watch because it's the first time we’ve seen him flinch. Homelander is scared because Soldier Boy was essentially him as Vought was gaining power.

Soldier Boy is obviously supposed to be Captain America, and I am interested to see how they handle having two supes that are built off iconic characters going head to head. We’ve seen Homelander be the antithesis of Superman so I’m not really sure if we need to see the antithesis of Captain America, it might be a little repetitive but it'll be interesting to see it play out.

A-Train finally gets back at Bluehawk but probably at the expense of his own life. I think Butcher is enjoying being a Supe more than he will admit, and we finally get to see Homelander confront the Soldier Boy situation.

“To be American means knowing you’re the hero”

The internet just now figuring out that Jensen Ackles is a phenomenal actor is hilarious to me…y'all think Supernatural had a chokehold on us for 15 years because it was a good show? Absolutely not bud.

My Mauve is still alive but she is captured and Homelander sucks.

Kimiko and Frenchie are my favorite, they are so goddamn cute.

Butcher refuses to stop being a selfish dickbag even after finding out that the temp V kills, yeah it ends up saving Hughie but if Hughie is that dumb let him melt his brain. Kimiko takes a dose of permanent V in hopes of getting her powers back.

Soldier boy is Homelander’s father, and Homelander who clearly has mommy and daddy issues is definitely shaken. Soldier boy seems pretty shaken too.

Mauve finally escapes and is safe.

Homelander and Soldier Boy are both having second thoughts about their emanate showdown. My sweet baby Mauve saves everyone and ends up faking her death escaping the wrath of Vought and Homelander. Ryan chooses to be with Homelander (a terrible decision really) and Soldier Boy is back in a box. Season 4 is going to be interesting.
