You never know what’s going on in Henry’s mind. He has a big imagination.

The Book of Henry was released to theaters in 2017. Speculating that his next-door neighbor is being abused, Henry tries to convince everyone of the facts around him. Hitting a rock in the road, it’s up to Henry’s family to pursue his final wish.

Based on what I saw of the trailer, I had no idea what to expect in The Book of Henry. It’s a story about bravery. Though some elements are a bit unrealistic, The Book of Henry encourages viewers to examine every piece of a puzzle.

I am impressed with every role that I see Jaeden Martell in. Playing a boy who is intelligent beyond his years, it’s Martell’s courage that made me respect him all the more. Henry was a challenging role. Martell landed comedy and a heroic countenance for all young audiences.

Naomi Watts was astounding. Because Henry is so wise, she acts more as a child than a parental figure. Going through a horrific situation that no mother ever wants to endure, her behavior is authentic. I wanted to give Susan a big hug. Finding herself in a mission, Watson did an incredible job dictating her emotions.

Jacob Tremblay is another memorable standout. He is growing into a fine young actor. The brother relationship developed between Martell and Tremblay was sweet. Tremblay demonstrated one of the most heartwrenching emotional scenes that I have ever seen a young actor pull off in a long time.

The Book of Henry is well-cast. Everyone connects to their characters, no matter how small their part is. Ensemble members have an integral duty of their own. I wish Sarah Silverman could have been in the film more. She always adds a touch of humor. Dean Norris was noteworthy. I always enjoyed his performances, notably in the series, Under the Dome.

I never expected Lee Pace to become a recurring character in the film. His approach to the role of a doctor felt realistic, especially when he was delivering news to patients. He was gentle and kind. You will always make friends in life. Pace studied his character very well.

In her film debut, Maddie Ziegler did a magnificent job acting with her eyes. She did not have an easy role to convey. Not only did Ziegler do a fantastic job as her character, but she was also given a chance to showcase her talented dancing techniques.

I am impressed with Colin Trevorrow’s attention to a story like this. The characters were rich, the story had depth, and the message is deep. Although some moments in the second half felt unrealistic. Characters got away with situations a little too easily. Still, that doesn’t stop the film from being an entertaining watch.

He paid close attention to certain camera angles and the editing. Trevorrow surprises audiences. That’s what I like most about this film. The Book of Henry is a story that stays with you. It’s best that you know as little as possible before going into this movie. Expect the unexpected.

I warn you that The Book of Henry is difficult to watch. For audiences who have been through illness and implications of abuse, watch this movie with caution. I teared up. Some scenes and behaviors hit a little too close to home for me. No matter how tough it is, in some ways, films help you find the closure that you don’t realize you’re looking for.

While The Book of Henry is a gutwrenching film, it will also make you smile and giggle. Go find it on Netflix.
