Hey all, Katie here and I am talking about a Nocterra. This is a comic that you should be reading! If you like thrilling stories with incredible visuals, this book is for you. It’s got some horror, some action, and a little mystery too, something for everyone. If you have not checked out this book, drop what you’re doing and leave now… and get that comic (anyone catch my Jurassic Park reference?)

Written by Scott Snyder and Art by Tony S. Daniels and Tomeu Morey this is a post-apocalyptic/ sci fi comic. I know those genres are not for everyone and I admit that this book is right up my alley. The alley of weirdos. Even if this is not your usually fair, this post apocalyptic tale is fun! The art alone is worth the price of admission.

The premise is that suddenly the sun is gone- it's still there- but no one can see it. The world is plunged into the "big dark." One minute people are doing there normal things: driving to work, drawing a picture, eating a meal... and the next moment it goes suddenly dark. That's scary but eh... eternal night is a bit played out. But wait, there's more! The lights went out and they never came back on, the twist is that things that stayed in the dark started to change. Not in a change into a fascinating new friendly species kind of way either. They become something out of our worst nightmares. If you don't "stay lit" you turn into shades (these awesomely drawn horrifying shadowy monsters) and not just people but animals too. The remaining humans must band together to survive in lighted enclaves throughout the world. Interested yet?

Enter our intrepid bad ass heroine- Val Riggs callsign: Sundog. She is a Ferryman- these crazy folk drive big rigs through the big dark carrying people and cargo from outpost to outpost. You didn't think people would just stay in one place right? Nah. So, if you need to get to another outpost or get something from another outpost you do business with a ferryman. These are the people that brave the dark, and get paid for it (of course) and our heroine Sundog is about to go on the ride of her life.

Suddenly there is a nefarious guy chasing her (he's like darkness himself... not a shade but not exactly human either), not to mention some questionable passengers, and her brother who has got his own problems. I don't want to spoil the series for you. There is a lot more going on than meets the eye. Sound intriguing? You should check it out.

nefarious guy (in case you couldn't figure it out)

If anything the best thing about this comic is the art. Imagine the possibilities with a dark world that requires light to thrive. Light bulbs, glow sticks, and anything bright you can think of (including incendiary devices too, let's not forget those) on a mostly dark background. Sounds pretty cool, right? Not to mention the creepy things that go bump in the well... bump in the always since this is a world of eternal night. These dark infused monstrosities are just a part of the world now.

Nocterra is a combination of a kickass story and phenomenal art that gives me goosebumps. With a creep-tastic enemy chasing her down Sundog has to push pass her misgiving and trust- something she's not so good at- and see where this journey will take her. What will happen next? I cannot wait to find out, what about you?
