Let’s take an adventure into the sky today. I bet the view is amazing from a hot air balloon.

The Aeronauts is a 2019 film based on a true story about a pilot and a scientist following an experiment as they fly into the skies in a hot air balloon. The fun doesn’t last forever when they end up in an epic fight for survival drifting higher into the frigid sky.

Being the ultimate epic adventure movie-lover that I am, The Aeronauts immediately perked my interest. I was not expecting this movie to be as suspenseful or well-acted. The Aeronauts is a film about bravery and never letting past mistakes stop you from achieving your goals.

Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones were terrific. Whether experiencing flying in the sky together or assuring each other about the looming terror, their interactions were very sweet. I do wish that Redmayne could have had more to do other than calculating their positions. Overall he did a nice job selling the scene and being genuinely excited to be up in the air, living out a dream.

Jones mastered courage and a resilient strength knowing that her body was failing due to immense cold along with painfully frostbitten hands as she climbs her way to the top of the balloon in one of the most suspenseful scenes. She also dons an important message about teaching oneself to let go of difficult events.

I was so excited to see that Himesh Patel was in this movie after seeing his phenomenal performance in Yesterday. Since most of the events take place in the air, The Aeronauts is a small cast. Other credits include Lewin Lloyd, Tom Courtenay, Phoebe Fox, Vincent Perez, Anne Reid, and Rebecca Front.

The best scene was the utter quiet when they’re sailing through the sky. Nowadays, it’s rare whenever there is a scene of solid quietness. Quiet is okay. Redmayne and Jones screaming out into the open sky is an important scene. Living out a dream is an experience.

Special effects were impressive. I actually felt as if I was on this balloon ride 35,000 feet in the air. Makeup was also used to the advantage to make characters look so frigid to the point that their hair had icicles! Getting trapped in a thunderstorm, strong winds, and sailing too high sold the harrowing events.

Before watching this movie I never knew much about the events behind this story. Amelia Wren (Jones) is a fictional character. According to history, it was another man who accompanied James Glaisher (Redmayne) on the mission. Depending on what director Tom Harper was going for I am a little disappointed that he took the approach to change history.

We cannot change history. The Aeronauts would make a better film if it weren’t based on a historical story that doesn’t hold true to the source material. Other than that unfavorable aspect, I still thought the movie was a great adventure film.

As we are heading into a new decade, this movie made me think. Don’t hold onto past mistakes. They’re only going to hold you back. Set goals for exciting opportunities that you would like to fulfill. Don’t ever let yourself fall victim to self-doubt. You miss out on so many incredible opportunities. Do it. Don’t let life fly by without living it.

If you would like to check out this movie, I think The Aeronauts is worth a watch. Find it on Amazon Prime and enjoy it for a nice evening movie. There are moments of terror and the climax is one of the most gripping endings that I have watched in a while.
