Thank You for Being a Friend

Picture it: The perfect new sitcom for you and your friends

I know it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month, or even your year.

And I’m not just talking about 2020.

It’s hard to believe that it’s only been a year since Friends was taken off Netflix. That feel-good, laugh-out-loud, sense-of-family comfort show has always been the perfect remedy for when everything seems to be going wrong. But when the world needed it most, it was nowhere to be found.

"I'll be there for you"? Apparently not.

It doesn't look like Friends will be returning to the streaming platform anytime soon, so while the two are on a break, fans of the popular sitcom have been forced to seek wholesome entertainment elsewhere.

If that's you, look no further.

Let me introduce you to another group of friends: Blanche, Dorothy, Rose, and Sophia—aka The Golden Girls.

Set in Miami in the 1980s, The Golden Girls follows these four roommates as they age together and navigate life's hurdles in their golden years.

There's Dorothy, the cynical divorcée; Blanche, the fun-loving slut; Rose, the kindhearted nitwit; and Sophia, the sassy elder.

From romance and sex to career troubles and money, these ladies experience the same challenges and triumphs as their friendly 20-something counterparts in NYC. Only, they do it with cheesecake instead of coffee. And at their kitchen table instead of Central Perk.

This show is nothing short of hilarious. Filled with sarcastic jabs, quick-witted one-liners, and clever comebacks, The Golden Girls is sure to have you rolling on the floor. Together, the girls have everything you've missed about Joey, Rachel, Ross, Monica, Phoebe, and Chandler.

Here are just a few familiar things these friendly ladies have to offer:

1. How you doin'?

If you love Joey's flirtatious catchphrase, Blanche Devereux is the woman for you. Her moves make Ken Adams' "backpacking in Europe" story look amateurish.

2. Aging gracefully

The girls know what it's like to see a few birthdays come and go. Rachel thinks 30 is old...

3. Staying hip.

Like Joey, the girls keep with the times.

4. "Picture it..."

If you're missing Chandler's sarcastic wit, Sophia is the gal for you. Unlike Miss Chanandler Bong, however, Mrs. Petrillo always has some sage words of wisdom for her friends, usually beginning with her iconic phrase: "Picture it..."

5. Unagi

"Unagi" is a state of total awareness. Or a salmon skin roll, depending on who you ask.

Anyway, only by achieving true unagi can you be prepared for any danger that may befall you. Rose Nylund has succeeded in this endeavor.

6. They know how to fake it.

Some things never change.

7. There are sexy Santas.

I gotta be honest, I don't get this one at all.

8. And the eccentric weirdo.

These ladies are two peas in a pod.

9. They practice safe sex.

(Somewhat unsuccessfully in Ross and Rachel's case.)

10. I know you've missed "Smelly Cat."

Rose is basically just Phoebe Buffay played by Betty White.

11. Remember Rachel's burnin' loins?

Blanche has 'em, too.

12. There's drama...

Same scenario here: woman goes after the man her friend likes, and drama ensues.

13. ... dancing

Because we just couldn't get enough of The Routine.

14. ... livestock

15. ... Star Wars references

16. ... missing food

Remember when Ross couldn't handle someone eating his Moist Maker? Like really, really couldn't deal? To the point of having to take a sabbatical?

Blanche knows the feeling.

17. ... the inescapable ex

(Oh. My. God.)

18. ... and friendly competition.

Could this show be any more perfect? You can watch the girls on Hulu, or find free (somewhat glitchy) episodes on YouTube!

The Golden Girls is Ross-approved, so grab your friends and some cheesecake and enjoy this heartwarming sitcom!
