David Lynch's MULHOLLAND DRIVE
Mulholland Drive. I’ve never been able to entirely comprehend this film, although it’s one of my favourite movies and I’ve watched it countless times. Its last spoken word—“Silencio” (Lynch, 2001)—uttered by a strange blue-haired female being, is somehow supposed to put a conclusion to the tragic mystery. What follows is my attempt to make sense of what is almost universally regarded as an enigmatic, inscrutable, and nebulous work of art.

The camaraderie of hyper-capitalism vs anti-capitalism in Squid Season 2
Many people have been anxiously awaiting the second season of Squid Game, the most-watched show on Netflix. To win prizes in the first season, players had to compete in several lethal kid-friendly games. The upcoming season, which is also expected to break yet another Netflix record, delves deeper into the limitations and economic background of the surrealistic games. Green light, red light. When the song starts, move forward; when it ends, freeze. It's a fairly easy game. Or is it that moving after the music has stopped carries a death sentence? It was clear from the first season that Squid Game allegorizes the horrors of capitalism through kid-friendly games. Three years later, the second season of arguably the most significant television program of our time advances its adamantly anti-capitalist theme. It accomplishes this by exposing the illusion of "choice" in a system threatening to starve the great majority. In this article, I dive deeper into the dystopian nuances of capitalism and the illusion of choice that stir up scenarios very similar to reality.

A Complete Unknown (2024)
A Complete Unknown is a story about the relentless pace of change, whilst steeped in its own nostalgia. This is not a criticism, just an observation. This is a successful film and that success lies in part in the nostalgic atmosphere, as well as the conflict of the drama – progression vs. tradition, or change vs. consistency.

A Shockingly Relevant Film From 1957. Top Story - January 2025.
My husband and I have a subscription to the Criterion Channel streaming service. Every month Criterion will organize its films into themed compilations. Some are pretentious sounding like ‘Cinema Verité’ others are kind of silly like ‘The Mustache Club.’ But they often help us decide what to watch. The theme that caught our eye this month was ‘Cast Against Type: Heroes as Villains.’ I love it when an actor shows off their range.
