Scout Comics 2021

Written & Illustrated by Stefano Cardoselli

Coloured Panta Rea

Lettered by Bran Meehan

Jonny is an old-model crash test dummy who's been repurposed as a hitman for the Don Vito Coriaci of sprawling ocean bound city-state Santa Clara City. Jonny is loyal and follows orders to the T, until his latest mission when he's tasked with bringing in a mermaid, a delicacy with healing properties When Johnny falls in love with the mermaid and decides to save her, the chase is on! Enjoy the first issue of this NON-STOP! followed by the entire story collected soon after in one volume.

And now for something completely different. If you don’t get that reference look it up but I will say it is completely apropos. There is something about this that just captures the readers’ mind, imagination and own creativity to see beyond what is presented and into a world that shouldn’t or couldn’t possibly exist. However with the bright bold and subtle colour work from Panta, which we’ll get into more later, along with the story as well as the characters and the world they live in this is beyond what one has come to expect. It doesn’t take very long to be drawn into this world and find the characters intriguing which naturally makes you want to see more.

I love the way that this is being told. The story & plot development we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well ass how the reader learns information is expertly presented to us. How we follow the sequence of events is how we fall in love with the story and it’s what keeps drawing us deeper and deeper into a world that is violent, grotesque and infinitely fascinating. The character development that we see is stupendous! While Jonny doesn’t get to be known very well thanks to no dialogue on his part those around him however are fleshed out beautifully as is their opinion of Jonny. The pacing we see is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists & turns along the way while setting everything up beautifully it’s easy to get caught up in this and be sad when it’s over.

I am thoroughly enjoying the way that we see this being structured and how the layers within the story emerge kept me rapt in all this. How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow is masterfully done as well.

The interiors here are bloody brilliant and that’s coming from someone who doesn’t normally gravitate towards this style of artwork. Make no mistake either this is artwork in its most pure form as it makes the reader feel something. The linework and it’s varying weights that we see being utilised to create the detail work is really nice to see. Backgrounds might not be as prolific as I’d like them but with how we see the composition within the panels the fact we don’t really see them doesn’t upset me at all. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show an utterly marvellous eye for storytelling. The creativity and imagination that we see throughout the book is off the charts amazing and I gotta say it leaves me completely chuffed.

So this is one of those imprint titles where the reader is presented with the first issue and then afterwards there are no more single issues and instead the trade comes out. So for those of you who like to wait for trades this is the best of both worlds because you can read the first issue and say hell yeah this is for me and then pick up the trade. Or if you are waiting for opinions of folks like myself then you should have this on order already!
