DC Comic 2021

Written by Ram V

Illustrated by Mike Perkins

Lettered by Aditya Bidikar

Reeling from his battle with the Pale Wanderer, Levi Kamei seeks the true nature of his transformations. And what better place to find his roots than the heart of the Green itself? There, he and Jennifer will encounter the realm’s many denizens, including one known as Holland and...Poison Ivy? Who will aid Levi and who will harm him? If he is to pull Jennifer and himself back to the real world, Levi will need all the help he can get to tame the Swamp Thing running wild within.

I am so digging this book. This issue has a little bit of everything and the opening itself is one that really grabs the readers attention and makes them want to see and know more. While I’m not sure what Prescot is I do wish this was taking place at Star Labs, after all they are the world leader in metahuman research if I’m not mistaken. Still that Levi has Jen helping him out after the events of last issue is pretty smart. I also like what it is we see happening because heck yeah that’s about as odd as it gets.

I am loving the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is impeccably rendered. I love seeing the avatars of the Green and with Extrano being back it is so very nice to see one particular character who is nearly on par with Donna Troy for convoluted histories. The character development is phenomenal! The dialogue and how the characters interact as well as act and react to the situations and circumstances they encounter do wonders for fleshing out their personalities. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing more and more of the story we’re drawn deeper into the green, fascinated by what we see.

The way that this is structured and how the layers within the story continue to emerge while others strengthen and grow is pretty stunning work. I am also enjoying seeing how everything works together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward as it’s beautifully achieved.

The interiors here absolutely bloody brilliant. The linework is exquisite and how the varying weights and techniques are being utilised to bring about this level and quality of detail work is mind blowing. Those two back-to-back two-page spreads are beyond wow moments then the creativity and imagination in seeing the Wodewos is horrifically fantastic! The utilisation of backgrounds throughout is essential when inside the Green and it looks so painstakingly rendered that I’m in love with what we see. That the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope of the story that we get here is magnificent! The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a masters eye for storytelling. The colour work is stunning! The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work shows someone who understands colour, the myriad of shades that can be seen through light sources that aren’t what you expecting to see.

If you aren’t reading this than your a bloody fool! Why because as sacreligious as this may come to some this is the absolute BEST version of Swamp Thing that I’ve ever read. Mind you I’ve read them all. With Alec showing up and how we see some of the various Avatars, though not all, who access the Green it sets up something new that’s on the horizon. This book from top to bottom, lettering included, is simply bloody mindbogglingly brilliant!
