'Supernatural' Will "Carry On" As Long As The Winchesters Want
There are no plans for the series to end, short of one of the stars dropping out or the ratings taking a nose-dive off a cliff.
Hell's bells have been ringing for the Winchester brothers for years, and it doesn't appear that The CW has any plans for Supernatural to end as long as the cast, crew, and fans are engaged. As the series approaches its 13th season, nobody could have guessed that Supernatural would become one of the longest running shows in recent history, surviving 264 episodes, a network rebrand from The WB to The CW, and countless deaths for each character. Supernatural shows no signs of slowing down, with an upcoming Scooby-Doo crossover and a spinoff in the works.
With the Winchester brothers at the heart of the show, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles have no desire of calling it quits anytime soon. But just like any show, at some point the question of just how long this thing can go is bound to be asked. For Supernatural, that question came at the 2017 Television Critic Association summer press tour. Mark Pedowitz, The CW's president, offered the best answer for fans of the series:
I can answer the 'Supernatural' question now. As long as the boys want to do it [Laughter from the audience] and ratings hold, Supernatural will stay on the air.
Essentially, that means there are no plans for the series to end short of one of the stars dropping out or the ratings taking a nose-dive off a cliff. Neither of those look to be close to happening, so with a steady 2 million U.S. viewers each year, Supernatural shows no signs of slowing down.
Given that the Winchesters have faced everything from meeting God and fighting Lucifer, parlaying with Angels and bargaining with Demons, to discovering Jinn and chasing shapeshifters - many fans of the series are asking the obvious question of where else the brothers could go from here. Whatever the answer, it's safe to say that they will carry on ("my wayward sonnnnn" - sorry, I had to) as long as we're willing to watch.
