Now it is time to seize the day. Keep on fighting to make a difference.

Stage 284 put on the popular musical, Newsies. Based in New York in 1899, struggling newspaper workers find out that their pay has been decreased. Not having this, the workers go on strike. The fight is not easy, but they stand their ground against the big business owners.

The cast of Stage 284’s exuberant energy lit up excitement throughout the audience. For some, it’s been a while since they have attended live theater. Everybody was having a fantastic time, dancing in their seats and applauding the amazing dance numbers. Newsies is a show about leadership. Stage 284 did not miss a beat in their joyous energy nor the message.

Not a beat of exhaustion was perceived as the cast danced in challenging numbers. I could tell that the cast of Newsies formed a strong bond. For a show like this, that is necessary. Connecting to their characters, I was impressed with the talents sprouted across the theater.

Cai Radleigh was excellent as the snarky and driven Jack Kelly. Refusing to be talked down to, Jack leads his team into the battle. Jack is a memorable influence to anybody, encouraging us all to use our voices. We could just make a change.

Radleigh excelled in the character, especially in their scenes with Lauren Abramson (Katherine Plumber). Other notables include James Turner (Davey) and River Franz (Les). They made the ultimate comedic due.

Crystal VanArtsdalen dazzled audiences in her signature song, ‘That’s Rich.’ She had a voice like no other. Social status plays a huge theme in Newsies. Depending on how you look at it, I liked how Medda looked out for the boys, helping them when in trouble.

The entire ensemble of Newsies deserves a round of applause. Everybody showcased talents whether singing, in dance solos, or doing flips around the stage. Special mention also goes to Jake Bassinger (Crutchie). Crutchie showed audiences that no matter the disability, you can still pull off noteworthy dance moves.

Not only did they have to memorize several dance numbers, but they also did a remarkable job getting into character. Comedy is not easy, but it’s landed in Newsies. The comedic timing was noteworthy. The entire theater was laughing at several key moments.

Acting is a challenge. Most actors were challenged to play two characters. Jamie Cabot had the opportunity to perform as a gentle old man who liked to joke until he was seen performing as a vile man with no regrets over his actions.

The technical team always has an exceptional hand in bringing a show to its feet. Without them, we wouldn’t have the beautiful lighting, costumes, or the fantastic set built on-stage. The stage resembled the streets of New York. The entire theater was put to good use as actors ran about the stage, even interacting with audience members at times.

And I cannot forget about the live orchestra who played the best music. Songs to include from Newsies are ‘The Bottom Line’, ‘The World Will Know’, and the signature song, ‘Seize the Day.’

Director Katie Clarke delivered the message of Newsies. Always keep fighting for what you want. She worked highly with her cast to enforce this crucial message of the story.

Theater brings communities to laugh, smile, and be together. Because the pandemic stopped in the theater for a brief period, the excitement was a noteworthy part of the show.

Get your tickets and catch a performance of Newsies at Stage 284. I had the best time. Newsies is a show that’s not to be missed.
