Another weekend, another movie is the motto I seem to be following this year, then again what else is there really to do during a countrywide lockdown. Its just a good thing that there are so many ways to watch a movie; with Netflix, Amazon & Disney Plus offering up countless movies to appease my entertainment appetite.

But enough of the introductory schpeel, what I actually want to talk about is the most recent movie I watched, Spiderman: Into the Spider-verse. I'll start off by saying, I'm fully aware this movie has been out for a very long time at this point, but I've never really had the money for the cinema and by the time I did it was already out of rotation in the cinema. However, I was very excited and surprised when it appeared on Netflix this year. I didn't want to waste any time to watch the next installment of possibly my favourite superhero.

So what did I think?

I mean, its fairly safe to say that it was going to take a lot for me to not like this movie, what with my absolute love of Spiderman really spurring me on. Besides, I can't imagine it would ever have been as bad as Spiderman 3 (god bless Tobey Maguire). Lets just be thankful that when it came to it, I really enjoyed the movie, immediately placing it in the ranks of one of my favourite superhero movies. Here are some of the reasons I enjoyed it...

  • Amazing animation style: I think what really made this movie was the style in which it was created. Of course, there have been movies that utilised the comic book style, but I don't think any have managed to pull it off quite as well as this movie did. It managed to bring a unique sense of quirkiness similar to that of Tom Holland's interpretation, without losing the dark and serious parts of the story. The style also leant itself really well to the comedy, elevating it to a point where even the silliest moments were funnier than if they had been in a life-like movie.
  • The various interpretations of Spiderman: obviously, one of the great points about this movie is the coming together of different forms of Spiderman from various comic books from past to present. I'm not one for comic books, so it was great to see these different versions coming to life to showcase the intricate world that has been created with these characters. My particular favourite being Peter Porker, honestly I thought it would be a really cheap character made only for laughs, yet I couldn't help but laugh when he appeared.
  • A great mix of serious and comical: one of the many reasons I enjoy Spideman as a character is his heartbreaking backstory (one of many), each round of movies provides a different origin story. With this movie, we're able to see a number of origin stories told in a rather hilarious way. Yet when it came to the peak of the movie, the writers weren't afraid to delve deep into all the characters and bring out the heartbreak they have all gone through.

At the end of the day...

I absolutely loved this movie, if you hadn't already guessed, it was heartbreaking yet hilarious, adventurous yet still told a fantastic story. It really brought to life a different side of the Spiderman universe that I hadn't expected to see. It was rather immediate that I called my family, also fans of superhero movies, and told them to give the movie a watch.

Having done a quick Google search, I've found the great news that there is going to be a possible sequel and TV show being created. I just hope that the sequel continues to experiment with the story and style that it started with, as well as possibly introducing us to even more versions of the friendly neighbourhood Spiderman.
