'Spider-Man: No Way Home' Trailer Breakdown

Well Marvel fans, specifically Spidey fans, the moment we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived with the official Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer dropping, and boy does it look amazing (pun very much intended).

Ever since the teaser trailer was released a couple weeks back, fans have been eagerly awaiting the extended trailer to try and work out just what we are to expect from this new movie, and the new trailer did not disappoint.

Fans have been trying to work out the plot to the new movie since it was announced and social media has been rife with theories, rumors, you name it. Many were hoping a proper trailer would help answer some of these questions, which it has.

So, without further ado, let’s breakdown some of the details of the trailer:

Villains

Since the movie was announced, one of the points of focus for many fans was around who exactly was going to be the villain. Both Homecoming and Far From Home chose to focus on villains we had never seen on the big screen before – the Vulture and Mysterio, so many naturally thought the threequel would follow suit and show us another villain not yet seen on the big screen, but we were so wrong. Instead of introducing a new villain, the new movie is doing one better and will include numerous villains for our favorite wall-crawler to face off with from different incarnations of the character.

Before the teaser trailer’s release, we knew Alfred Molina and Jamie Foxx were reprising their roles as Doc Ock and Electro from the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield Spider-Man eras, but the teaser also alluded to the inclusion of Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Sandman and the Lizard.

This full trailer now fully confirms Dafoe is returning as Green Goblin, as well as the Lizards inclusion confirming we will see at least five villains.

For Spider-Man fans, this is actually a huge deal. One of the web-slinger’s most famous foes is the Sinister Six. A deadly team of six villains who try to team up to take Spider-Man down, so the fact five villains are included in the trailer, and that Sony have been contemplating a Sinister Six film for some time, could mean a sixth villain will also be brought in.

Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes was a focal point in the post-credits scene from Homecoming and he knows Spider-Man’s secret identity, so he is one of the favorites to return. It would also make sense to include a Tom Holland-era villain. *SPOILER ALERT* - with Mysterio seemingly deceased at the end of Far From Home, that really only leaves Vulture in the Holland-era, however, they could also choose to introduce a new villain altogether.

In terms of character design, both the Green Goblin and Doc Ock look pretty much identical to how they did in the Maguire movies, but Jamie Foxx has definitely had an upgrade. His character design was highly criticized by fans, but now he seems to look much more like his comic book version.

Lizard also looks similar to how he looked in The Amazing Spider-Man and Sandman, well he’s CGI sand so not much we can say there.

Plot

In terms of plot for the new movie, this new trailer gives us quite a lot of information. The teaser showed us the movie will pick up after the post-credit events of Homecoming, where Jake Gyllenhall’s Mysterio revealed Spider-Man’s secret identity to the world, framing him for the London attack and Mysterio's murder.

This is a very interesting plot device as it’s not something we’ve really seen before from a superhero film. Most include at least one or two characters finding out the big secret, usually a love interest, family member or villain right before their death, but this will be the first time an identity has openly been revealed to the world from a character who is all about keeping his identity a secret. Although Spider-Man did reveal himself to the world in the Civil War comic arc, almost every other iteration of the character has guarded the secret well.

This revelation is what causes Peter Parker to approach Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange and ask for his help with making the world forget. Despite warnings from Benedict Wong’s Wong, Strange agrees to help Parker with a spell. However, this seems to backfire and cause catastrophic consequences. It was highly hinted this event is what causes a rift in the Multiverse, but the new trailer seems to confirm this, with Strange himself confirming; “when you botched that spell were you wanted everyone to forget Parker’s Spider-Man, we started getting some visitors”.

We also see a lot of action in the trailer and it looks like some of our favorite characters may be in trouble. Perhaps the most alarming sequence involves Zendaya’s MJ falling from a tall building while Spider-Man tries to jump and save her. It would be a bit of shock for them to kill her character off, but one can’t help but notice the similarities between this sequence and the hotly debated Gwen Stacey sequence from The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

The other interesting thing to note is, the villains from the Maguire-era know Spider-Man’s identity, but Maguire’s version, not Holland’s. Doc Ock actually makes reference to this in the trailer by saying "you're not Peter" when Holland is unmasked. Also, what is going on with Doc Ock? Is he a villain or is he good, as the trailer seems to allude to a bit of both, or is that just me?

Something Missing?

One of the most interesting parts of the trailer, is the lack of Maguire and Garfield's Spider-Men. It's been widely rumored they are both supposed to be making an appearance, and whilst it is highly possible based on the fact their respective villains are present, and the introduction of the Multiverse would certainly make it possible, it does make sense not to include them if they are indeed going to be in it. If they are included, it would be such a huge and momentous moment, which could be ruined by a trailer. This is something best left for fans to see on the big screen as they are watching the movie itself.

No Way Home easily matches Endgame in terms of the hype and could possibly be the most anticipated movie in the overall franchise. There’s so many theories and possibilities it’s literally anyone’s guess as to just how it’s all going to unfold. We now just need to wait until December 17 to find out.
