'Spider-Man: No Way Home' Trailer Breakdown

Well Marvel fans, after what felt like an eternity, the teaser trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home has finally been released, and boy does it look amazing! Although only very short, there was a ton of information to take in and a lot to digest, so today we are going to breakdown what we saw in the trailer an what it could mean for the next big MCU film.

In terms of the actual plot of the film, as expected, it looks like it is going to pick up from the cliffhanger that Far from Home left us on, with the world now knowing Spider-Man is in fact Peter Parker and him being blamed for the death of Mysterio. No surprise, this has a major impact on young Peter's life and puts those he cares for in great danger. (Did anyone else see Happy Hogan in a seemingly inescapable situation?)

We also hear the wonderful J.K. Simmons reprising his role as J. Jonah Jameson in the trailer as well, doing what he does best: making Spider-Man out to be the bad guy and announcing his secret identity.

In an effort to get back to a normal life, Peter visits Doctor Strange in the Sanctum Sanctorum, which, for some reason yet unknown, is covered in snow. He asks Strange if it's possible to change what has happened and make the world forget. Despite warnings from Wong not to cast the spell, Strange goes ahead and does it anyway. During the spell, though, Peter asks about leaving MJ, Ned, and Aunt May's memories of him being Spider-Man intact. This seems to cause some issues for Strange and affect the spell he has made, with a voice-over explaining they are meddling with forces they do not fully comprehend.

We know the MCU's is set to explore the multiverse in great detail, and many fans accepted it was either Wanda or Loki who caused or would cause the break. But this trailer suggests it is actually our favorite webslinger and Doctor Strange who break reality trying to mess with time.

This is easily one of the most anticipated entries into the MCU, possibly on par with the likes of Endgame. And since its announcement, there have been rumors galore. The most prevalent of which is the supposed inclusion of both Andrew Garfield's and Tobey Maguire's past iterations of Spider-Man. The trailer is missing them, which to be fair, does make sense, as that would potentially be a huge spoiler. Sony and Marvel would want to keep hype around the film going for as long as they possibly can. If they are indeed in the film, there's a good chance they won't appear in a trailer at all or potentially only have a voice-over appearance, much like Palaptine's laugh at the end of the The Rise of Skywalker trailer.

What we do see, however, is Alfred Molina's highly anticipated return as Doctor Octopus near the end. Now, it has been confirmed he is playing the Maguire era Doc Ock. However, even though the character is being de-aged, he does look quite different from when we last saw him at the end of Spider-Man 2, so I personally think there may be something else to this. The fact is, though, Doc Ock does know Spider-Man is Peter Parker, as he finds out before his "death," but this Spider-Man isn't his. Another issue the film will potentially need to address with this character is his redemption arc in the finale. It remains to be seen just which point in time he was plucked from. Once we know that, we can begin to work out his motivations at the time. We also see a bolt of electricity strike the ground, which one can only assume is a nod to Jamie Foxx's Electro from Garfield's Amazing Spider-Man 2, since it has been confirmed he, too, will be in the movie.

Easily the biggest shock from the trailer, though, came in the form of a simple glowing orb rolling across the ground and a very menacing, but extremely recognizable, laugh. Again, rumors were going around that Willem Dafoe would appear in the role of the Green Goblin, reprising the role from Maguire's first outing. Dafoe himself has remained tight lipped about any potential cameo appearance, but surely this confirms it, right? The first Spider-Man was bang on my generation of superhero films, so I remember Dafoe's Goblin vividly. To see him back in that role would be spectacular.

Regardless of what happens, the trailer has shown that we will be exploring a more real and slightly darker side of the MCU, in terms of dealing with Peter's secret being exposed. But we will still get some humor as well. This is something the MCU has become really well known for being able to balance well. Hopefully, we will get a more in-depth trailer before the film's release on December 17, 2021. But even if not, one thing this trailer guarantees is, "we're gonna have a hell of a time."
