Keep your shoes tied, learn to walk on walls, and take an adventure.

Remember, always keep your shoes tied. If you don’t then you’ll trip yourself up, fall out a window, and find yourself walking along the walls shooting web out of your hands.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was an epic film. Directors Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman presented a story about a young boy, named Miles, who finds himself as the next Spider-Man. Training alongside several different counterparts of Spider-Man, Miles learns to trust himself, take responsibility, and save the world.

Up until going to see this film in theaters, I have never seen a film in the Spider-Man franchise. Superhero films never appealed to my interest. Into the Spider-Verse was an easy story-line to grasp. Now I’d honestly like to watch the other Spider-Man films.

Upon seeing that it won a Golden Globe for the best animated film I decided to give it a chance. The film actually took 180 animators to complete the animation! That’s the largest crew ever for a Sony Pictures Animation! The film’s animation was set in the design as a unique comic book. Animation has evolved.

Voice talents included Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, and Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali as Uncle Aaron. In my opinion, I think voice acting is tougher. It’s all about your voice. Actors have to think about their characters differently instead of performing in live action. Emotion is tough to portray, especially through voice.

That’s another aspect I enjoyed. Into the Spider-Verse was surprisingly an emotional film. Miles has to learn to take responsibility and face the challenges of the world, maturely. The film also handles topics such as coming of age and even death, quite maturely. That is really hard to do.

Other than Spider-Man, or Peter Parker as he’s called, a Spider-Man Noir, an anime Peni Parker, and even Spider-Ham make an appearance from their own dimensions to help with the battle. Each had a very diverse look, and character. At first, I thought this was a little random and overdone to have this many different Spider-Man personas. Then again, it adds fluid into the film and more laughs.

Speaking of which, this film is really funny! Especially scenes between Uncle Aaron and Miles. Miles carries the film, especially when he’s trying to learn how to take control of these bizarre powers while impressing girls at the same time.

Character designs, animation, and backgrounds were all enriching and bold. Artists were not afraid to take a risk. It’s okay to exaggerate characters for the sake of audience reaction. Writers also did a wonderful job with character development, and especially the villains’ backstory!

Just one criticism I had was the reveal of one very important character as a villain... Why did this character have to be a villain? I don’t understand what it had to do with the story. It was more random in my opinion. Others may have a different reaction. Besides this one scene, which I gasped out loud in the theater, it didn’t ruin my overall opinion on the movie.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a powerful, enriching film that dealt with mature themes. It took me on an adventure shooting webs through the trees. I recommend this film to all audiences, especially Spider-Man fans. I see from reviews that it has a positive reaction among audiences. It has a great message, too

Keep your shoes tied, learn to walk on walls, and take an adventure. You have to see this film in theaters to see the terrific flow on animation on the big screen.
