Spider-Man 97'

How I'd continue one of my favourite superhero shows

A while ago I wrote a few articles speculating logical directions that X-men 97' (the upcoming sequel series to X-men Tas) could go. At one point I noted that i wouldn't be surprised if other 90s animated marvel series' returned as well. While only a continuation of the xmen is confirmed, I thought id write about a continuation of spider-man TAS in regards to logical stories, what had been planed before cancelation and other aspects I'd like to see.

A sequel series to Spider-Man TAS should of course reunite Spider-Man with Mary Jane who had been transported to an unknown dimension. The original series planned to do so before it's cancelation. Apparently, writers had wanted to have Spider-Man find MJ in an alternate dimension which was like Victorian London and terrorized by Carnage in a Jack the Ripper type role. I think that specific plan should be abandoned for a couple of reasons. First of all, I just don't think it makes for that good of a Spider-Man story. Secondly, the X-men animated series has already done a plot where Jack The Ripper works for Mr. Sinister so I don't think it's worth doing something so similar. I'm not sure how the show should bring MJ back but I'd hope they'd take things in a different direction. On the other hand, I'd be more excited to see other rumoured plots be used in a new series.

I think many of the plans writers had before the original shows cancellation would work well if a modern show was wanting to use them. Less detailed plans included introducing villains Beetle and Puma which I'd see involved in smaller but well done episodes. Larger arcs would follow Richard Fisk becoming a crime boss known as The Rose and Spider-Man teaming up with ghost rider to stop an alliance between dormamu and Mysterio. Not only would this mark ghostrider's first use in this series but it may also be an excuse to bring back Venom who sacrificed himself in a previous fight with dormamu. Similar claims say that Sandman was not allowed to appear in the original series as there were plans to feature him in a Spider-Man movie that never ended up being made. Now a continuation of Spider-Man TAS would almost definitely be wanting to use sandman as he is such a long-standing Spider-Man villain.

Of course the series could also look to the comics for inspiration. There are four comic stories I'd like to see in the show, even if they would be toned down a bit for the show.

Superior Spider-Man

In the comics Superior Spider-Man is a long arc in which a terminally Ill Doctor Octopus switches bodies with Spider-Man and dubbing himself a "Superior Spider-Man". Of course Peter eventually gains control of his body once again but the arc itself is drawn out and pretty morbid, so it couldn't be super true to the comics if put into a show that spin-off from a children's show. Even though the original series had moments where spider-man mistakenly sides with doc oc a less dire multi episode arc where doc oc and Spider-Man switch consciousness is something I'd like to see. Even if they drop the aspect where Doc oc is terminally Ill. Instead I'd have doc be a good guy while Peter is in control of him and once they switch back maybe Doc wonders if he can continue to be a hero moving forward.

Morlun

I'm not that partial to the totem aspect of the Morlun story in the Spider-Man comics, in which Spider-Man being bit by a spider was more mystical than by accident. However I do really love the idea of Morlun hunting beings with animal powers and Morlun as a character in general. Needless to say I'd like to see Morlun in a Spider-Man TAS sequel series. Like adapting Superior Spider-Man it would need to be toned down for the show. For example it couldn't have Morlun eat Spider-Man's eye like in the comics but it could have a disheveled but Spider-Man variant with an eyepatch travel to Spider-Man's world to warn of Morlun's arrival.

Kraven's Last Hunt

In the comics Kraven's Last Hunt sees Kraven tranquilize Spider-Man, bury him, impersonate him, defeat a villain called vermin and then take his own life. Obviously that's too dark to play out in a Spider-Man Tas sequel series but many elements could be used in such a show.

The biggest change would be Kraven of course not killing himself but instead he could renounce being a villain, retire from hunting or even sacrifice himself to save Spider-Man from Vermin or another villain.

Clone Saga

The three plots I've mentioned are pretty well regarded in the comics but the Clone Saga is more divisive. Yet there are parts of the Clone saga I would really like to see in a continuation of Spider-Man Tas even if those parts have already been hinted at or referenced already. Plot wise they would and should change quite a bit but id still like to see Miles Warren as the Jackal, a Ben Reilly from Peter Parker's dimension and Peter's evil (at times) clone Kaine.
