Sony and Disney/Marvel New SpiderMan Deal

SpiderMan is back in the MCU!

Do you guys remember what happened at the end of July when Sony and Disney/Marvel could not get a deal for SpiderMan in which resulted in having him removed from the MCU? The two studios previously announced this summer that Spider-Man would leave the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the companies couldn’t agree on a new financing deal. Disney wanted a 50/50 cut on all revenue made via Spider-Man films, instead of its previous deal, which included five percent from the first dollar gross and merchandising revenue. The separation meant Feige would no longer oversee the Spider-Man films, which fall under Sony’s banner.

Well guess what? Spider-Man is coming back.

Sony and Disney/Marvel have come to a new deal where they would bring back SpiderMan into the MCU.

The details of the new deal is that it was signed late on Thursday night. Negotiations involved top players from both studios, including Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman, Feige and Walt Disney Studios co-chairs Alan Horn and Alan Bergman. In exchange for lending Feige’s producing prowess, Marvel and Disney will receive roughly 25 percent of the profits, according to insiders. Disney will retain its merchandising rights and will put up roughly a quarter of the financing. As part of the arrangement, Spider-Man will also appear in one future Marvel Studios film.

It has brought joy to fans and even Kevin Feige, Marvel's owner, when they were found out about the news. Kevin said that "I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it."

While fans are happy about the renewal of the studios’ teamwork because they’ll get to see Spider-Man hang out with Black Panther or whatever, for Marvel and Sony, continuing the partnership is also mutually beneficial. The Spider-Man movies have been making bank—Far From Home made over $1 billion at the box office this year—and the connection to the MCU writ large is an undeniable part of its appeal. (If you’re gonna watch a Spidey movie, chances are you’re checking out and enjoying other Marvel movies too.) And the more success Spider-Man gives Sony, the more it’ll be able to extend its own Spider-verse, which will include a Venom sequel directed by Andy “tha God” Serkis, a Morbius flick, and a follow-up to the Oscar-winning Into the Spider-Verse.

I heard a rumour that with the new deal, Venom will be intoduced in the MCU at some point, making Spider-Man the first hero to cross universe with Marvel and the Venomverse. Kevin says it here: "Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse, you never know what surprises the future might hold."

The third Spider-Man movie will be released on July 16th, 2021 by Marvel Studios. Amy Pascal will also produce through Pascal Pictures, as she has on the first two Holland-led films.

Pascal was equally euphoric in her statement. “This is terrific,” she said. “Peter Parker’s story took a dramatic turn in Far From Home, and I could not be happier we will all be working together as we see where his journey goes.”

So this is good news all around, but also, let’s not act like this was the evacuation of Allied soldiers from Dunkirk. Two gigantic companies decided that, in the shared interest of making a shitload of money in the future, they should probably work out a deal. Marvel, which initially received five percent of the stand alone Spidey films' first dollar gross, wanted a 50-50 split. That’s an absurd increase; you can’t blame Sony for balking at it. (The parameters of the new deal between the studios have yet to be reported.)

I really think that Spider-Man will excite Marvel fans for its return in the MCU with a new movie confirmed, also with the bringing of Venom possibily introduced in the MCU at some point later in the future, it could mean that Venom could come in around Phase Five of Marvel along with new potential heros entering such as Blade, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four.
