SM:TV Was Brilliant

All the reasons why!

If you were a 90’s kid in the UK, you got up every Saturday morning to watch this show. The weekends always went off with a good start thanks to this show. It got everybody involved. The kids always had a laugh. The adults got some of the jokes that kids wouldn’t get and there was no filters. The presenters were big kids themselves. There has never been another show like it and since the show ended, Saturday mornings have never been the same. The sketches were fantastic.

Dec losing his marbles over incorrect answers on Wonkey Donkey is TV Gold. I have a feeling the kids behind the phone calls are fake looking back now, but I still think it’s funny. In the reunion Dec apologises if he made any of the kids cry. I’m still convinced the kids on the phone were actors so I don’t think he should feel bad for it.

The rest of the content was brilliant and everybody wanted to be a part of it. I did when I was a kid. I don’t know a single person who hated this show, that’s how good it was. I’ve seen so many comments on YouTube videos saying how much they would love this show to come back.

For over a decade and a half, I go back and binge watch old clips and episodes of the sketches featured on SM:TV. Some of the sketches are dated, and would not be allowed on a children’s show anymore, but it’s a testament of its time and something that deserves to be archived in TV history.

Awesome Cosplaying Before Cosplaying Was A Thing

Before cosplaying became mainstream, fancy dress wasn’t taken very seriously. Ant’s interpretation of G-G-G-Gary and Dec’s Misty is an hilarious dynamic along with her undying love for Brian McFadden. Who knew Gary would be cheating on Misty with Jessie? Obviously not canon, but still funny.

Chums

Chums is a great parody of Friends. I wouldn’t dare say it’s better than the original, but they’re pretty damn close. To have so many celebrities and household names like Jerry Springer and Mariah Carey guest in it is just incredible. Looking back, Chums still makes me laugh and makes me appreciate the original Friends sitcom even more.

The Tie-Ins

The show had cartoons and live action shows tied into the show. I remember Pokémon and Sabrina The Teenage Witch being cashed in in a lot with the Pokéraps, the fights and Dec’s kindergarten poetry about Sabrina. They even managed to throw Britney Spears in.

As well as introducing me to Pokémon, it also got me into Digimon.

Doing Everything With A Laugh

Weather it was a shameless parody of a quiz show, reading post or another whacky sketch, it was always done with a smile and a laugh. I still love watching this show because it brings back so many happy memories.
