Sisters Of House Black

Many wanted the magical world of Harry Potter to continue after seven bestselling novels and 8 blockbuster movies. So many have also expressed disappointment in the Fantastic Beasts series and The Cursed Child book. For those who really want to explore the world of Harry Potter and its wonderful characters in a deeper manner, I reccomend this fan-made film, Sisters of House Black.

I’ve seen quite a few fan made films like one with Tom Riddle. I’ve also seen Harry Potter parodies like the finger puppets, Comic Relief parody with Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders and Cookie Monster’s version. I think that Sisters of House Black is one of my favourites, even though I’ve only just found out about it this week.

The film is one that I’ve recently just discovered. The special effects may seem strange with its big use of blue hues, but the Harry Potter films did a lot of that. It may not have the best cinematography in the world, but it made up for it with passion. What was clear in this film was a passion for the Harry Potter franchise.

I loved how they brought the backstory of three minor characters sisters gave them spotlight. I do feel the film remains faithful to the source material. The atmosphere is similar to the Harry Potter universe with the Hogwarts cloaks and wands.

For those who don’t know anything about the Harry Potter universe, this film about three sisters; Andromeda, Bellatrix and Narcissa Black during their time at school at Hogwarts to their adulthood around the time when the first wizarding war ended.

I think it’s a great film with amazing acting. The only problem that I can think of it that you really have to know the Harry Potter universe to be able to follow and understand the film. What’s even more poignant is that a lot of the cast consider themselves LGBTQ+, and considering JK Rowling‘s tweets show a lack of support for the trans community, it is a nice touch.

The best thing about this film is how they show the three sisters as best friends. In scenes when they’re laughing together and talking about boys, it feels like they’re just ordinary sisters before they got obsessed with the pure blood supremacy.

They nailed the characters in this. Bellatrix and Lucius are nailed excellently. This film made me realise that Narcissa ended up losing two sisters in the end. Andromeda chose to marry a muggle-born, which was frowned upon in her family. Bellatrix lost her sanity and her obsession with Voldemort, which we all know, ended up becoming the unmaking of her. At the end of the canon universe, Andromeda and Narcissa are both still alive. It would be nice if they got to see each othe after the wizard it war.

The blooper videos are funny. I get the feeling that this film was set in a university/college campus. I think that’s a really awesome touch considering Hogwarts is a magic school. I thought some of the bloopers were amusing especially the bits where it’s meant to be intense and then there’s barrels of laughter.

The film does a wonderful job showing the human code to the three sisters and shows us what they all wanted. Andromeda wanted love, and got it by marrying Tonks, but lost her family contact in the process. Bellatrix desired power, which she got. She ended up becoming Voldemort’s second in command. In the end, the power she aquired, was her downfall. Narcissa wanted happiness and she got it with Lucius and Draco.

Ultimately what this film teaches us is that the power of fan work. It gives us new depths to minor characters that are often brushed over. It sparks new fan theories and hours of discussion. If you love Harry Potter, and are particularly interested in The Black Family and the Slytherins, then I would reccomend this film. It’s only about forty minutes, but I admire all the effort that’s been put into it.
