'Secret Obsession' - A Movie Review

Clearly, someone did not go to villain school!

So, one of us has passed how to escape the villain class, while someone didn’t pass how to be a villain. This ought to be an interesting plot to unfold.

Secret Obsession is a newly released Netflix film about a woman who has lost her memory after a fatal car accident. With no memory of her husband, Jennifer and Russell become reacquainted. Retracing her steps, Jennifer discovers some dark secrets about the man who claims to be her husband.

Although a gripping plot line, Secret Obsession falls on numerous plot holes and one of the worst villains who can’t even cover his tracks! However, it is a good action-packed thriller with a fantastic actress donning a powerful message. No matter the challenge you have to pick yourself up and keep persevering in moments of terror.

Brenda Song is terrific as Jennifer! Not only does she have to mentally act as her character, but she has to physically act like her, constantly limping, struggling to make it downstairs. That’s a difficult task to portray. Song is spectacular and she carried the whole film in her utter fear and desperation to escape.

Performing as her mysterious husband, Mike Vogel is great as an actor but his character was not fully thought out. His odd behavior and poorly executed plan are laughable to the point that he needs advice.

As Detective Frank Page, you may recognize Dennis Haysbert’s deep distinctive voice from familiar Allstate commercials. Haysbert is remarkable and he had everything in good hands.

While he is trying to endlessly figure out clues, the detective has a sad background that is only given attention for a moment. In my opinion, if writers focused on this obstacle, he would have had a more believable character arc.

Outside the main cast, only a few supporting cast members try to put sense into the confusing plot line. One character, dressed in black, has ominous music playing in the background is only seen twice, but we never know who he is!

One of my favorite characters is Nurse Masters performed by Ashley Scott. She is always checking in and keeps the plot rolling.

In a similar plot line to Stephen King’s Misery, it’s easy to point out the flaws while at the same time feeling yourself lean on the edge of your seat as Jennifer struggles to make it back to her locked room. The writers and director should have stuck to their own story instead of copying from an already famously dark story.

Since the twist is spoiled right in the trailer, the foreshadowing is easy to spot right from your couch. The plot holes stood out like slices of Swiss cheese. So many holes!

Secret Obsession falls on lazy writing. It could have been a better executed film had they paid more attention to the character dynamic and story elements. It also could have done a better job with the villain who clearly did not attend villain school! Seriously, keep a tally mark on how many times the villain messes up.

Despite these flaws, I did find the opening and climax suspenseful. Secret Obsession begins with a gripping sequence of Jennifer running away from a killer. Don’t let an injury mark you as weak. Jennifer is constantly on the run, despite her injuries and multiple hits to the head. We can pick ourselves up.

Although Secret Obsession ran on terrible plot holes, and a villain who failed out of villain school, it’s a riveting movie. Be aware that there is gut-wrenching body horror at times, and the villain's motivation may trigger some viewers making them uncomfortable. If you would like to watch it, avoid the trailer, which spoils everything.
