Rock Out to North Shore Music Theatre's "Rock of Ages"

Don’t stop believin’.

North Shore Music Theatre stages the head-bopping rock musical “Rock of Ages.” Set in the 1980s, Sherrie, a small-town girl, moves to Los Angeles, where she meets Drew, an aspiring rock musician. While developing feelings, Drew’s workplace, The Bourbon Room, is threatened with demolition. 

Rock out to North Shore Music Theatre’s “Rock of Ages.” This was my first time experiencing this high-energy rock ‘n’ roll musical, and it was a wild time. Not only does the show deliver chaotic adventures, outrageous comedy, and plenty of raunchy stage direction, but “Rock of Ages” is about believing in your dreams no matter what anyone says. 

You wouldn’t think a pair like Drew and Sherrie go together; then again, you might be surprised. Ej Dohring and Chelsea Williams play the leads, bringing an appealing romance to the stage. Drew and Sherrie want the same thing in life, but they go about it differently. 

Despite his long-haired punker appearance, Drew is a good-natured person with big dreams. Dohring brings heart to this role. His singing voice is smooth, giving Drew an earnestness beneath the character’s rock-star aspirations. 

William’s Sherrie is equally engaging, capturing the character’s aloof personality, but also Sherrie’s determination to win her dreams. With her country girl lifestyle, she doesn’t fit in with the intimidating rock world, but doesn’t let others mess with her. 

An ensemble fills the NSMT stage as rockers, strippers, and producers. As I have said, no small part exists in the theater. Several actors play key supporting roles. 

Matt DaSilva (Ronny) deserves an award for comedy king of the evening. As Drew’s mischievous rocker friend, he also serves as the narrator. DaSilva improvises several funny moments, including fourth wall breaks and references to other musicals. 

Nathaniel Hackman brings plenty of swagger to Stacee Jaxx, an egotistical rock star. Dennis Dupree (Evan Harrington) provides a second source of humor, but also trying to keep the Bourbon Room open. Hertz Klineman (Tom Galantich), a powerful developer, who threatens to replace the rocker music industry. 

Someone will always be here to support us. Justice Charlier (Toneisha Harris) becomes a surrogate mother to Sherrie, helping her find her voice. Harris has a powerful voice. 

Regina (Lily Kaufman) and Franz (Michael Schimmele) show audiences to never mess with underdogs. “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” is a notable number. 

I wasn’t expecting to see gymnasts. Several actresses have astounding agility as they climb aerial ropes.

The staging by Kevin P. Hill is unapologetically raunchy, with physical comedy, suggestive choreography, and loads of innuendo. This musical will not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it welcomes audiences into its world. It knows exactly what it is and never apologizes for it. 

The NSMT stage is transformed into the punk rocker world. An electric guitar is designed onstage. Stage lighting reflects an electric heavy-medal concert. The stage crew is hard at work with sets, 80s clothing, and neon signs. 

I researched the music more once I got home. “Rock of Ages” is a jukebox musical filled with familiar 1980s songs. Conducted by Peter Leigh-Nilsen and a live band, songs such as “Don’t Stop Believin,’” “Waiting for a Girl Like You,” and “Can’t Fight This Feeling” are woven into the story.

Beneath this raunchy and outrageous story, Hill’s direction delivers a genuine message about finding your own way. No matter your dreams, always believe in yourself. Just because things aren’t going your way now doesn’t mean they always will. Follow your own path.

NSMT’s “Rock of Ages” is loud, raunchy, and packed with rock ‘n’ roll spirit. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but I had the best time watching the show. Catch it on the NSMT stage before it leaves on Sunday, Aug. 23.
