How I feel about the stories and characters

Now there is this series that my mother had told me to read since it was quite interesting. About a former FBI agent and things that she seems to be going through in her life now. At first, I was skeptical since the fact that I am normally not someone who usually goes ahead and read something that is recommended to me. I am someone that if you normally tell me to read or watch, I will not feel interested and will not read or watch what was recommended to me. But for this series, I decided to give it a try and I have to say, it had definitely caught my eye and I had finished the first 5 books within about a week and a half. And I have just finished reading books 6 (not pictured) and book 7 is released on December 24th, 2020.

Now, if you have not read any of the books or have not finished the books. I do suggest that you do not go any further into this article since it might become a spoiler alert for you if you are interested in reading the whole book series.

The story begins with a former FBI agent name Eva Rae Thomas. She is a single mother who moved back to her hometown of Cocoa Beach, Florida from Washington D.C. after her husband leaves her for another woman. And since Eva Rae has been someone who worked all the time and did not spend a lot of time with her children, her two daughters Olivia and Christine and her young son Alex. Eva Rae’s ex-husband had been the one who was spending all his time with the children and now it was her turn to be learning how it was to be taking care of them all on her own. She was also a book writer and had written a few books based on her FBI experience and profiling criminals.

Now, each book, there was something interesting happening. From children being murdered by Eva Rae’s own stepfather in the first book. A man plotting revenge on her after an incident with his father back when she was in the FBI years earlier, to the point where he kidnapped her oldest daughter Olivia and sold her on the black market in the second book. In the third book, Eva Rae sets out to Miami to go look and save her daughter Olivia from the people who had bought her off the black market, with her sister that reconnected after being many years apart from each other. The fourth book with Eva Rae’s half brother shooting up the school and finding out that there is someone threatening people to commit acts in order to save the lives of the ones they love. The fifth book, Eva Rae setting out to help after there are a series of hoax calls about people who are armed and dangerous and the SWAT team ending up killing those people.

Now, like I have mentioned before, this was a pretty interesting book series. But as I was reading them, I came to observing Eva Rae Thomas and there were just some things that I do not like about her at all.

For instance, although Eva Rae had been a good FBI agent and did well on profiling criminals and everything. Since she is no longer an FBI agent and had since retired from that business, she needs to be focusing more on what truly matters in her life, and that is her children. Because of the fact that Eva Rae was not there for them as they were growing up because she was working all the time. She is beginning to learn a little more on what she needs to be do in order to fill in the gap that her ex-husband Chad had when he was the one taking care of all the children instead. But instead, she ends up focusing on cases when it is not really her business to have been focusing on in the first place. I mean, yes, the second and the third book had to deal with her because of the vendetta against her and her daughter being placed on the black market. And her younger half brother in the 4th book. But with the first and fifth book. Where she was not truly needed to be in, she ended up working on and not spending time with her as she should have been. Eva Rae had begun to worry about other things that she would not focus on her children and whenever she needed to travel somewhere (which by the way, really with no money), she left them under her mother’s care. And she is doing all of this while she is not even working anymore. Eva Rae is no longer an investigator and there is no reason why she should even be spending all the time that she is doing on the cases.

Also, Eva Rae begins a relationship with her old high school boyfriend Matt and half the time, she does not even treat him as her partner. Instead, she focuses on other things and does not treat him the way that she should be treating him. Matt would literally do anything for Eva Rae and instead, she barely gives him any kind of attention and yet, he still wants to be there for her. He would even feel that she is not giving him the care that he is giving her and does not want to give up on their relationship because he is hoping that it is still going to be working out between them.

In the 4th book, Matt saves Eva Rae from her grandmother’s house being flooded as a hurricane was hitting the coast. But then later on, Matt gets saved by her ex-husband Chad, dying in the process. And because of that incident, in the fifth book, Eva Rae has distance herself from Matt, blaming him for Chad’s death, although it was not his fault. She allowed Matt to move into her house with his son and rarely acknowledges him living there and uses the excuse of writing her new book to why she cannot give him any sort of attention. But Matt knew from the beginning that Eva Rae was still angry at him for what happened to her ex-husband Chad. So, he ended up moving back out and lived on his own again with his son.

So, I am not a big fan of Eva Rae at all. I mean, yes she is good at being an FBI agent. But when you are no longer on the job, I do not see why is it that you need to continue working on cases that clearly you do not need to be focusing on. That is something that she should just leave for the actual investigators and just be focusing on being a mom and taking care of her children. Being part of the FBI was a part of her and that was placed in the past.

And one other thing, for someone who has been working in law enforcement, has not been acting like it now that she is not. In book 6, Eva Rae and her sister Sydney opened up a clinic for young girls who end up being held captive by traffickers and nurture them back to help. And for a lot of the girls that they end up bringing to the clinic, they are not doing it the legal way. Right in the beginning of the book, Eva Rae and Sydney stake out a trailer where they knew that there was a trafficked girl inside and waited until it was the right moment to go ahead and take the girl. They went ahead and forced the men to give the girl to them and knew that the men were not really going to be saying since what they were doing was illegal. So, although yes they do have a better chance of getting away with things just because of who they are dealing with, it is still illegal to just attack in order to save someone (although I know that they are doing it for the right reason).

I mean, overall, it is a good book series. The stories that are happening in each one of them are pretty interesting. It is something that you might want to keep reading the more the more you get into each book. But with Eva Rae Thomas as a person, I am definitely not a fan and everyone else will definitely have their own opinions about her if you are interested in reading the whole series or if you had read the series. So, if you are interested in a mystery series, then this might be the series for you. Although it is a bit of a spoiler as I have spoken about pieces of the books. But for anyone who is still interested in wanting to know more about it, you’re welcome to read them.
