The climax of the second arc! Paxton attempts to escape the Spiral, desperate to get back to his children, but his friend and recent lover, Claire, stands in his way. Bec, in the clutches of Preacher, discovers that her fight to take back the cabin has become a struggle for her family’s survival!

I have to say I’ve been enjoying the evolution of this series. Paxton’s beliefs that they should remain isolated has changed over his journey and meeting Claire and Miki. Meanwhile with Ty and Bec each facing their own inner and outer demons while trying to protect their home we see such parallels between the two, even three, arcs. Each of them has had to face adversity to become the people they were meant to be and in this harsh crazy world that means fighting for survival and their place to call home. While this arc shows they can overcome any obstacle in their paths that doesn’t mean they are safe, quite the contrary they are and will be seen as targets by those they’ve met along the way. However Ty’s wife and her people joining them and with Paxton welcoming everyone to his home well the next chapter will be about seeing what happens to this group during the next wave.

I am loving the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceedingly well. The character development that we see is sensational thanks to the dialogue, character interaction and how they act and react to the situations and circumstances they encounter. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the page revealing more and more of the story we’re drawn into this so deeply.

I like how we see this being structured and how the layers continue to grow, evolve and emerge as the encounters and avenues dictate. The layers contain the bits where both Bec an an Paxton learn what they are made of and how this works with and around the main arcs adds depth and complexity in some really genius ways. How everything works together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is beautifully achieved.

The interiors here are absolutely stunning. The linework that we see is fabulous and how we see the varying weights and techniques being utilised to create the detail work is astounding to see. That backgrounds are so integral to the story and the are essentially a character in their own right makes seeing them glorious. How they work within the composition of the panels to bring us depth perception, a sense of scale and that overall sense of size and scope to the story is incredibly well rendered. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling. The colour work is equally as brilliant to see. The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is dome with such aplomb. The creativity and imagination on display throughout is beautifully rendered as well.

The concept of this remains the same but the evolution of the story has been gradual and effective to see happen. I have been enjoying watching these characters grow, change and evolve becoming the people we see at the end of this issue. Growing up awfully fast Bec and Ty especially is something I cannot wait to see more of and the ramifications of the violence that Bec unleashed has got to have taken some kind of toll upon her and that too I am looking to see explored more. Whether this toughens her up or breaks her down remains to be seen. That we are so fully engaged and invested in this series is a great testament to how well this is written and illustrated.
